The wheel studs are real cheap too. The first time I used my trailer I made sure the lugnuts were tight before I left, but about 250 miles into a 500 mile day I stopped for gas and noticed 3 of the 4 on one wheel had backed almost all the way off and all 8 were loose!

It's an old rule of thumb but still a good one to use.
Making sure you pack the bearings right is also critical but is fast becomming a lost art in this "modern age." Putting a big gob of the grease in your palm and then working the grease into the bearing by pushing the edge of the bearing into the grease to force it INTO the balls and/or rollers of the bearing and in between the bearing rollers/balls and the bearing cage is vital. But I personally recommend that everyone...

Lou,
You hit the nail on the head. The AP grease that comes in cartridges for grease guns for ball joints is not adequate for wheel bearings. You must use wheel bearing grease, either Ford spec or GM spec but never mix any grease types. Unlike motor oils which are okay to mix, grease is NOT. So if you are unsure what grease came with the bearings from the factory, clean it out and start over.

That's a tip I picked up working in an auto shop many years ago.

Thanks to everyone for the reminders. Everything I have is pretty new, and I've been so busy I haven't even thought about this stuff. I recently did about 1500 miles, and didn't touch-check the hubs on the trailer behind my bike once. I think I'm getting early old-timers disease. I still have the spare bearings from my last boat trailer, but none for the new one... Duh!
Oh, well! Anyways...... thanks.

Stan....thanks for the link and all the information that has poured forth from it. I am quite serious about getting a Harbor Freight trailer to get me around to some of the longer rallies. All of this info is going to help me tremendously. I think that it can be a good trailer as long as one takes the necessary precautions.

I have that habit also, Lou. On my commute to work I see a lot of trailers with either the tire blown or the entire wheel come loose. It seems that most of them are the smaller 8" boat wheel type. These...

Good tips guys. I haul trailers a lot and check the hubs and hitch at each stop. Depending on use,I clean and re-grease bearings every two years and carry an extra set of bearings for each trailer I have. It can be a real problem to find the right bearings when you are out in the boondocks. Bob

Stan, thanks for the heads up. I've had no problems with the standard Harbor Freight bearing set up in the past but agree whole-heartedly with the use of the Bearing buddy caps. The ones on the backside of the wheel are just too difficult to get to and that old saw about out of sight ---- One additional tip I would like to pass on is to insist on getting true ball bearing grease to use. Many places carry only the normal all-purpose grease which to my opinion is just too light to perform...
