these are shakedown runs for the iron butt rally, still debating if I want to keep the bike and dump a bunch of money into the fabricating a custom fuel tank + and auxiliary tank or sell it and use something more appropriate like a sport tourer

Just be careful my friend, don't push too much. Remember your enjoying yourself and its the trip and not just the destination. We don't want to read about someone having an accident because of fatigue or biker error.

I've done Key West in under 24hrs from NY (over 1500 miles) on the stock seat....round trip....twice! Next month will be #3
You don't need a trailer. (unless its for your dog than I understand, otherwise if you need a trailer your carrying way too much crap) especially for just 3 weeks
I have a new(ish) Kuryakyn full dresser bag that will be of no use to me once I get my new bike. I never used the bag but my friend used it once before I bought it from him.

I would recommend a sheep skin cover. I have ridden up to 500 miles in a day with no PAIN! Plus if it gets cold, it's nice & warm. Last year in August, I was over in the Canadian Rockies & it started snowing, I was glad to have that sheep skin.

This year I have invested in heated gloves, so it pays to be comfortable.

Regarding the comfort of the stock seat.....At first I thought the stock seat was OK till I took a long trip. Oh man...my backside needed a rest every 50 miles. I now have a Corbin seat and I really like it. If you can find one (Ebay) go for it. Mustangs are comfortale also but if you are 5'10" or taller the Corbin will give you another 1 to 1.5 inches of room. Bob

The stock seat feels pretty dang comfortable. Is there a huge difference between it and a corbin (I'm over 6 foot)? Really all I think I need is a back rest (does that just bolt on behind the stock driver's seat?) and a better backrest for passenger (probably go with the trunk/backrest setup - any suggestions?). And, to clarify, I just need the highway pegs - I have crash bars.

OK, the most important things you'll need are (in order of importance)

Vance & Hines Dual Bagger Exhaust
K&N Air filter
Rejetting the carbs (this might not be necessary, check your spark plugs)
Mustang seat (if you're 5'8" or shorter) or Corbin seat (if taller)
Cobra, MC or Honda Aero floorboards (Cobras do interfere with V&H, so check the Exhaust section of this site for the fix)
Crash Bar with Hiway Pegs.

Congrats on the bike. I am also making a long trip this summer. I have the mustang seat, but also an "Air Hawk" cushion. I recommend this or a gel cushion for long hours in the saddle. Sounds like you have some fun ahead of you...Bob <><

1) Driver's backrest
2) Trunk
3) Lowers
4) Highway bars
5) Trailer
6) Aftermarket exhaust (maybe)

My plan is to take off this summer and travel 6,000 miles in 3 weeks. Any recommendations on how to make this as comfortable as possible?
