Has anyone ever replaced the lifters in one of these engines to try and eliminate the ticking. Mine just turned 25k this past weekend. I rode from eastern NC
to Bluefield WV and back and the bike ran great but that noise gets on my nerves.

I've talked to mechanics at several shops and none have ever been inside one of these engines. One guy told me that he thought it could be done without
removing the engine. The diagrams also show spacers under the lifters. Maybe this is a way to adjust...

Mine just started making a ticking noise about two weeks ago. Seems to be there at idle and is not there all the time. I just bought a cheap mechanics
stethescope at harbor freight for a couple bucks. I'll have to see if this helps locate the noise. (My wife is a nurse, but really didn't want grease
on hers !)

Honda's are known for lifter noise. My 750 Ace with only 8k miles made this noise and the local Honda mechanic said that as long as it keeps ticking, then
don't worry about it. It's when it stops ticking that I need to worry because that would mean the engine just died. He was being truthfully sarcastic
and then said it was likely the primary gear on it also.

I took mine to several honda mechanics. They all said it sounded like a lifter, but they all also said it would likely run forever, the noise is just a
nusiance. I tried a couple of additives (seafoam, marvel mystery oil) but they made no difference.
If anyone finds a solution, please let me know.

i've also heard the ticking for a while now. i took mine to the nearest Honda service dept. and they diagnosed it as bad hydraulic lifters. if they're
correct they quoted me around a grand to replace both of them. when asked what would happen if not replaced they said i could drop a valve part into the
piston. it's good to hear it also might be the primary drive gear instead. thanks for the eye-opener.

Alan, what you have described about the noise going away after a gas stop sounds exactly like both my T's would do after a short stop. On both it was the
primary drive gear and replacement fixed both of them. I used a section of old hose pipe as a stethoscope to find where the noise was the loudest. On both it
was at the lower right engine case just above the brake pedal.

Hydraulic lifters are self adjusting for lash or valve clearance. Try changing to a different brand or viscosity of oil before tearing into the engine. At 25k,
you're just past break-in mileage and shouldn't need new lifters.

Also, be aware there is a primary gear condition that causes a noise similar to ticking. Check out this thread if you haven't already.
