I helped another Shadow owner do some maintenance on his 1100 Spirit this past weekend.

We replaced the front brake fluid (rear brake is a mechanical drum), which was a bit of a challenge since the Spirit handlebars have alot of angle on them. In
any case, the odd thing was this piece of lightweight plastic (like HDPE) floating atop the brake fluid inside the master cylinder. My T doesn't have
anything like that and I can only guess it's for easier viewing of the fluid level through...

Take the foam chip out of the front fluid chamber and throw it away. If you don't the foam will break down and make the fluid milky and syrupy. After a
while you will not be able to see in the sight glass. This will cause problems and $$$$. The syrup will get into the chamber and top brake lever piston and
make it so it will not seal properly. Believe me as it cost me.
The dealer thought the foam chip may have been something the the bike was shipped with and should have been taken...

I was reading the factory manual this weekend and in the maintenance section there was a statement about checking the brake fluid level. It says to make sure
the float level is between the marks. So, maybe the plastic piece IS in there for making the fluid level show up better in the site glass. It also says to
check the level with the bike on the side stand and the bars locked to the left. This is supposed to be the most level the brake reservoir will get.

I'm pretty sure the plastic piece is in there to eliminate the air gap between the fluid and the top of the reservoir. By doing this, there is less of a
chance that moisture from the air will contaminate the fluid. Most autos have a rubber boot attached to the lid for the same purpose. I think the rear fluid
reservoir on our T's have the rubber boot, if memory serves me right.
