The factory manual only describes how to check the timing......not how to set it. I think you are right about not being able to adjust it because the newer
bikes now use an inductive pick-up coil.

I also noticed it seems to run better as it gets warmer outside

Part of the problem found
the choke cable where it attaches to the carbs one side the cable housing is broke
it was holding the choke open on one carb all the time
I put the end back in the housing and put some black tape over it till I can get a new cable bikes runs much like I got it

still not best I feel it cutting out at higher rpms
no telling what else who ever rebuild them messed up...

I didnt think you could change the timing on these
as for fuel pump I would think it would be the same in all gears not just the uper 3
it accels great in 1st and 2ed and most the way through 3rd

heres my usall shift points
1st 15 mph
2ed 25 mph
3rd 35 mph
4th 45 mph
5th 50 mph

it will pull in 5th up to 70 before it starts acting up
in 4th it will start about 60 or so
but 3rd also starts about 60

air filter is good...

Checked the air filter lately? Sounds as if it either is starving for air, or has a blockage in the exhaust. The only other thing that comes to mind is if the
timing is set too low, or the fuel pump is weak.
