Thanks Fred & Dan for the extra information. I did have some concerns about handling, and the mpgs I'm hearing from you sound more in line with what a heavy, carbureted bike would probably get. That Venture is over 800 pounds dry.
I'm starting to get the impression that I may already have the right bike for me--and as my wife keeps reminding me: "It's already paid for!"

Hi Dan: Sue's Yamaha will hit the auction block in a few weeks. I have sold my pull behind trailer and will keep my cargo trailer as I use it to haul lots of other things. I will sell the wheel chocks (Pingel) once it warms up enough to crawl under the trailer and turn the nuts. Bob

The latest Venture style is the one that I am speaking of that some of them whine so bad they drive their owners to sell them. I have demoed three Ventures, all for about 26 miles each. I did not notice the gear whine until I was listening for it on the third ride (after having read about it).

I do believe you dealer is full of it. Ventures get 32 to34 mpg. My recommendation besides taking a very long test ride is to find a Venture forum and find out everything...

We've been in Florida since November. Being from Wisconsin, we would laugh when people down here complained it was cold at 50 degrees. Less than 6 months after we got here, my wife pointed out that I had been FLORIDIZED when I complained it only got up to 68 one day. Actually, if I never see snow again, it will be too soon.

I just got back from a little sightseeing and a new RV pulled in... towing an old Venture. I'll have to pick his brain, but it's the newer...

No. The Valk does not have cruise. Just a VistaCruise throttle lock. However, the Valkyrie Riders Cruisers Club website has the instructions for installing a MagnaVox automobile cruise control on the Valk. Looks pretty easy.

A little over 5 years ago a drunk driver passed out behind the wheel and hit me from behind doing 45mph. I was parked. I have a pretty bad herniated disk in my neck, and I exercise and take drugs to avoid the surgery. The trailer I tow behind the T often has a cervical traction unit in it when we tour.

The Venture my friend has is an '84 model, I think, and had 33,000 miles on it when he bought last August. He bought it in Searcy, AR and rode it back to Houston. He had to first replace the tires, since it still had the factory, 23 year old tires on it!! He gave like 3500 bucks for it with the Voyager kit on it. That thing runs like a top, but the gas mileage stinks. I think if it had a carb rebuild and a good tune up it would do better.

Stan, how old were those top-heavy Ventures? Fred, how old are the Ventures with the load gear whine? I think they changed the Venture in the very late 90's, and they've kept it virtually the same since then. Sitting on the bike at a stealership, it seemed pretty well balanced and the salesman said the designers at Yamaha went to a lot of trouble to get a low...

Keep telling yourself that. It's almost as big a crock as "He died doing what he loved". That's BS too. Dead is dead. And nobody wants to do it! If you're doing something that you have to keep reconvencing yourself that it's what you want, then I have my doubts. If you want to quit riding because you don't have the stomach for it or it scars the crap out of you, then that's a different story.
