Thats the beauty of this style car, you can build a decent rat rod for under 3K if you're creative. And it will probably get more lookers than the $50,000 Chevell parked next to you

Hey Bud,

Thanks for posting as I have never heard the term " rat rods ". That 40 chevy pickup is quite cool and I can see why it would draw a lot of attention.

I used to be into old cars and would like to get back into that hobby but it's just too expensive nowadays.

kcroadrocket, I absolutely adore rat bikes, but now I learn there's a whole rat AUTO thing going on, too?? I am drooling over that second car you posted. We've been looking for an old truck around here to mess with, but I really like the idea of the ratty chopped body with a newer suspension, frame, motor, etc. Theres a guy here who restores old cars and trucks and his back yard is a total museum of ratty ol' gems just waiting for some luv.

hey putz,
that sounds like a real "ground pounder". i like watching the drag races, but never really got into the speed thing much. like with todays cars, "cost too much"!!
i did have a '62 ss 409 when i was playing with the old cars, but after buying it, i found out what parts cost for those things, so i was always afraid to get into it much. those engines were like boat anchors around here for a long time, now they're like gold! guy near me still holds...

One of my few dips into building cars was a '64 Chevy. I ultimately painted it, but I ran it for over a year primered about 5 different colors. Like you said, the engine compartment was so clean and shiny that you could eat off it, but the outside was pretty ugly. I did the interior in patch work blue jeans, complete with pockets, buttons, and zippers. It was a real sleeper, but putting out about 575HP and turning low 11's in the 1/4 mile.

i'm with you, that's the reason i got out of these things...just got too pricey! one of the cars i had about 6-7 years ago was a beautiful black '57 ford hardtop. most of those rusted around here, but this one was absolutely rust-free. had a 351 windsor and mustang gt 5 speed. i put it on a "cars for sale" forum for $14,500 and never sold it there. ended up trading for a chopped '50 ford. not long after that my computer died and i lost info about the...

Yesterday after church Sue and I stopped at a car lot that deals exclusively with classic cars. Man....you talk about salivating on my Sunday best!
Of course none of the cars had prices on them so I had to contain my excitement till we got home and went to their web site.
That is when the full steam ahead freight train de-railed. As Alain noted....the prices they are asking for these cars are out of this world!
I don't have the time or knowledge to build my own classic...

Bud....how kewl is that! I'm fascinated, but not totally surprised. As you know Street Rodding and Customs have completely priced themselves into extinction. No young person today could get into Street Rodding because of the exorbitant prices todays owners think that their cars are worth. If I wanted to get back into the sport/hobby I could never come up with enough cash to buy any of my former cars. The prices on them is ridiculous. I could even afford to build something from scratch. So...

alain, this is the "in" thing around these parts. even have a show completely dedicated to this type rod. it's called the "GREASERAMA" and it brings out a huge crowd. they also have a bigger show of these over in illinois called "the HUNNERD CAR PILEUP" they won't let anything in with shiney...

Hey Bud....most "beaters" that I have seen are usually painted in black or grey primer, but this is the first one of 'color' that I've seen. The look is realy primal. I am not familiar with the use of air bags on a suspension for a pick up. Is this new technology or has your friend designed a lift suspension?

hey mark,
this isn't a project anymore, IT'S FINISHED! this car is missouri safety inspected and completely road worthy. can you imagine the look of somebody in a 40k dollar luxury vehicle being passed on the interstate by this thing?
when i had some of my old cars, people would actually get mad at me when i passed them...they'd turn around and pass me right back, and my cars were not rat rods, just old hot rods and customs.

i love the rat rods, both in cars and motorcycle. this past week, a friend of mine bought this one. in case some of you don't know what they are, they're a well built (hopefully) frame, motor, tranny, suspension, brakes, etc. with an old rusty body of some kind fitted to them. this one started life as a '40 chevy pickup and parts from all sorts of cars/trucks added.
he asked me if i'd come over and stencil his doors and make it look old like the rest of the truck, so...
