I just bought a 1984 shadow vt700. The bike rode fine the first time I took it out, but then started developing some issues. The clutch suddenly was not
engaging and the engine would rev up in first gear and barely move. I bled the clutch and it worked fine again. I drove it for some 20 miles, stopped in at a
store and the clutch was back to its former state of not working correctly. I got it home and bled the lines again (I did not see air come out either time I
bled the line) and it...

Kind of sounds like the slave cylinder is binding on the return from disengage and not letting the discs make solid contact. Bleeding it frees it up enough to
get it working again for a while. One things for sure, if you continue to ride it very much with it slipping, then you will need new disc before too long.

The gears are actually engaging, but they are slipping. The bike has momentum but there is serious slipping. It almost feels like there is a 50-50 chance
that the clutch will work properly when I start it. Sometimes it works great, sometimes not. The bike has 40,000 miles on it and the previous owner claims to
have taken good care of the bike (although it sat for almost two years). If I have worn clutch disks, could this problem be on and off like this? I'm not
actually sure that...

A bad or leaking clutch master would cause it to stay engaged.....not disengaged. The fact that it improved after bleeding is baffling to me because it should
not have had any effect on the engaging part of it. Unless of course this down time allowed it to cool off enough to gain grip. I suspect that you have worn
clutch discs, but before you go any further, you need to determine what oil the previous owner used in it. If oil that has friction modifiers in it was used,
then this can cause...
