Can one modify the stock pipes |
Lead | ||
|
All, I recently found myself in possesion of a '98 T with the lovely dual exhaust pipes on it. My wife (not a rider) says that they sound nice but could
be a "little louder", with safety being the word for the day. That being said, is there anything that one can do to make the sound a little throatier
without loosing the 'duality' of the exhaust? I have a buddy who has V&H pipes on his 99 Aero but they both come off the same side. We both agree
that the pipes on my 'T' look better, but the sound of the V&H, man Oh man.

My friend, you can have the best of both worlds! It's called the Vance & Hines Dual Bagger exhaust. They cost about $500 retail, but you can find them
on this forum or on eBay for much less. Use the "search" feature to read all about them and check out the "Members Bikes" section to see
how they look. In fact, I think there are even some .wav files on here somewhere that will let you hear them as well!

Jeff, the answer is yes and there are a zillion posts on the subject. One or more of the following links should help you find out what to do.

Here's what I did. Everyone that knows T's says they sound good. http://hondashadowacetourer.yuku.com/topic/3482/t/Gutted-my-spare-mufflers.html
Here are some videos with sound after my exhaust mod http://s57.photobucket.com/albums/g217/ragtop69gs/

So far, everything I have done to my stock mufflers has been about gutting the little glasspack at the end. Each time as I drilled more of it out, the sound
got better but still too high pitched which was a bit annoying. The last and probably the final mod was taking a 2 1/8" bi-metal hole saw, which I used to
drill out the same thing on a 95 Shadow VT1100, and centered it around the weld of the glasspack and drilled the whole thing out leaving a 2 1/8" hole in
the end plate of the mufflers. Put the chrome end caps back on and am satisfied with the end result. Much deeper without being too loud. I can ride with my
Harley buds and still hear mine to know when to shift and my wife told me it sounds alot like a friends Road King with stock pipes. I wish I had done this in
the first place. $13.00 for the hole saw and about 15 minutes and your good to go. Good thing is, it comes out in one piece and can easily be welded back in if
you don't like it. But I think you will.

This sounds like the easiest mod of all that I have seen. Do you have any pics of the end (without the endcap) with the hole in it?

I will try to get a picture of it this weekend, Jeff. I need to shine 'er up and get some new pictures of it anyway. I have added several new items since I
bought it a year ago.

You can gut the mufflers all you want, but it won't solve the root cause of the problem which is the ridiculous 2-into-1-into-2 headpipe. It's just
gotta go and that leaves you with only one choice, Vance & Hines. So drill away at the mufflers while keeping an eye on eBay and this forum for a good used
(or scratch and dent) set for the future.

Chicago,
Looking on V&H's website, they only seem to list the "classic II" for the T. I am kind of fond of the dual look. Will the "Bagger Duals" for the Nomad fit the T? I took a look at the pics of your bike and your pipes do not look stock, are they the Bagger Duals? Jeff |

Yes, they are Bagger Duals. Keep an eye on eBay or this forum. They show up in both places pretty regularly. I got mine off eBay from Dennis Kirk scratch and
dent auctions. No, the set for the Nomad will not fit the T.
Also please keep in mind that Vance & Hines don't bolt up perfectly with Cobra floorboards. Minor modifications will have to be made to one or the other. Search this forum and you'll find a million posts describing the problem and several solutions.

Thanks, I finally got up the courage to cut out the resonator. What a difference. Took me about 30 minutes int total.
Steps are: take the bags off, take the endcaps off the muffler, cut the end off with a hack saw, drill the rest of the resonator out with a hole saw, put the endcaps back on, put the bags back on, ride a little louder. Jeff |

I think what Chicago keeps trying to say is, the stock exhaust systm on the ACE Tourer is actually a single exhaust.
The two head pipes that come out of the cyclinders actually go into a single collector and shoot down the right side of the bike. The pipe that goes down the left side of the bike, only gets about 15% of the exhaust. Kind of like a two into one, with and extension going to the left. The V&H Dual Baggers (and Jardine + some others) are actually two head pipes that go into separate mufflers that travel down each side of the bike. The pipes that V&H sells that go down only one side of the bike, will not fit an ACE Tourer. If you want actual dual exhaust, you have to get rid of the stock set up. Aside from changing the sound, it changes the performance of the bike a well. This is what they look like on my bike. http://hondashadowacetourer.yuku.com/topic/2378 -Dan
