Hi Kevin,
Welcome to THE forum. ![]() There are a couple of exhaust options available for the 'T'. Stock mufflers Stock mufflers (drilled out) V&H Dual Baggers (complete dual exhaust) Jardine Rumblers (slip-on mufflers) Roadhouse (2 into 1 exhaust) Many people like the V&H pipes. They are the loudest and many people follow up with re-jetting the carbs to improve fuel flow and get maximum HP out of the bike. There is an issue of floorboard clearance with the V&H setup. It is fixable in a couple of different manners, but should be noted. Some people prefer the Jardines. They are simple to install and there are no issues with clearance anywhere. They are about mid-range in volume between un-modified stock exhaust and V&H. One minor downside to the Jardines is that the outer diameter of the mufflers are smaller, so there is a step down in exhaust diameter that some people have avoided just to maintain a more stock appearance. A lot of people are fans of the original un-modified stock mufflers. They fit the lines of the bike and are pretty quiet. You will also find a number of people that have drilled out the stock mufflers. I personally run this setup and have received a number of compliments on the sound of the pipes. Mine sound very similar to the Jardines, but without the step down in diameter. We have a couple of people that have gutted the stock mufflers completely and built there own mufflers inside the stock shell. Jay (Ragtop) installed Cherry Bombs (or some off-the shelf brand) of car mufflers inside the stock shell and they sound real good. The Roadhouse mufflers are not very common mostly based on the 2-1 design. A lot of people want the dual pipes just for the looks. Those that have switched over have been pleased with the sound and performance of the exhaust. I hope this gives you an idea of the common exhaust solutions available. I believe the V&H Baggers are no longer being produced, so if you want them you will have to watch E-Bay and this site for them to pop up for sale. Sometimes a set with minor imperfections will turn up. Good luck with your bike. I hope you get many miles of reliable riding from it. Stay tuned to this forum and you will find a lot of very useful information about the bike, riding in general, gatherings, and a host of other topics as well. We are a friendly bunch that hang out here and I hope you will hang out with us. Ride safe. Putz |

How do you mean "gutted". Holes drilled in the end plate or what? Could be a trip to a muffler shop might close up the holes. Just a thought.

They look like they're completely ripped out. There's a little jagged edge of metal, but otherwise it doesn't look like there's anything inside the pipes aside from the pipes.
I've already taken it to the repair shop, and they're the ones who said "You're going to need new mufflers at least, but the muffles will cost about double a new set of pipes, so you might look at that." Kevin |

Kevin here's a link to what I did with my mufflers. There are links to some video/sound files in there somewhere so you can hear how they sound with my mods.

Kevin,
I changed to the V&H. I have a full set of stock exhaust in the attic that have been drilled out with a couple of 3/8 holes in each. A little scratch but nice. They sound OK. Do you want them? How much do you think? work with me. They are just taking up space anyways. Kens T |

I have a set of Jardines that are in great shape. They were put on the bike and then removed because the new floorboards would not fit. The stock exhaust was put back on.
I have no idea what they are worth. I can pull them out and take a picture if anyone is interested. I still have th box they were shipped in. |

Cointoken, you've got me curious now. What Jardines do you have? I have the Rumblers on my T and they don't even come near the floorboards. As far as I know, the Rumblers are the only Jardines that will fit the T.
Now, the V&H's dual full exhaust system has had some floorboard issues. Stan "We are different --yet we are the same."

Re: Exhaust or mufflers | #11

The biggest exhaust issue is the fact that the stock headpipes are 2-into-1-into-2 and EXTREMELY restrictive. They even have a piece of mesh inside to try to force the front cylinder exhaust out the left side of the bike.
If you notice on every sound file except for the V&H, you can hear a "wheezing" sound at high RPM's. This is why the true dual Vance & Hines is the ONLY exhaust option IMHO. It's about performance, people. Also, be sure to check your spark plugs before you rejet. I've had two T's, added V&H to both, and didn't have to rejet either one. As far as sound is concerned, at 60 MPH with a full-face helmet on, I can't hear my exhaust at all. |

Re: Exhaust or mufflers | #12

The Jardines are marked 14-1912-01. I made the assumption the reason they were removed was because of the floorboard issue. I purchased the bike and the Jardines were included in a box. The bike has stock on it now. I had read posts where non stock exhausts interferred with the installation of floorboards. Wrong assumption on my part.
Anyway, I do have them in a box if anyone is interested. |

You have the Jardine Rumblers slashcut style slip-on mufflers. These do not interfere with floorboards as they are mufflers only that use the stock headpipes. Here is their link; jardine.rideshop.com/cata...ers_id=183

Yes, there is a minor issue between V&H exhausts and Cobra floorboards, however the modification is a simple one and thoroughly described under "Intake and Exhaust".

Re: Exhaust or mufflers | #15

Hey all, Chicago mentioned sound files for the different pipes and mufflers. Where can one get a hold of those?
How do the jardines (slashcut, turned down) and V&H compare to the stock? And what does the 3/8" holes in the stock do to sound and performance? Kevin |

There's a link to the sound files right here in this thread. The link is in Ragtop's post dated 12-2-06.

Kevin,
If everything else falls through, I have a set too and would consider swapping my stock mufflers for your gutted ones plus some cash. Denny |
