Posts: 3 10/21/07 10:56 AM	Tags : None I discovered that the right rear shock's lower mounting on my 2000 1100T with 17,000 miles is broken, and the shock will have to be replaced. I checked the Honda shop manual regarding the replacement procedure and it only covers which bolts to remove and the torque specs for re-tightening. I would assume that the shocks are supporting the rear suspension and that it is necessary to find a way to take the weight off those shocks in order to remove them. And if that is the case I do not have a way to do it, and off to the dealer my bike will go. So I have three questions for any one who can help. 1) Can these shocks be replaced by a back yard mechanic? And if so, what is the procedure and equipment requirements? 2) Should both shocks be replaced at the same time? 3) What should I expect to pay for shocks if I have to go to a dealer? Thanks in advance to any one who can help.

HSATF 1st Officer Posts: 690 10/21/07 12:47 PM	Motorcycle shocks typically have the spring wound around the hydraulic damper, so yes, it supports the bike. You will have to lift the bike to get the weight off the shocks to replace them. Remove the saddlebags for improved access. A: 1) Yes, a lift and the proper tools and wrenches are needed. I use a floor jack with a 2x4 to spread the load to lift my T when needed. 2) They should be. The damping will wear over time as the spring rate will too. One fresh shock and one old one could make for odd handling response, but some might say the swingarm is pretty stiff and not that wide as to amplify any such effects. 3) alot. try ebay or just an aftermarket shock (i.e. Progressive). I wish someone had air shocks for the T. Much more load adjustability. Did you do anything to cause the shock failure? extreme overload or very rough roads? Or is it just a bad weld? duke loud horns save lives

HSATF Tail Gunner Posts: 139 10/21/07 3:34 PM	What is "extreme overload" ? I ask because i weight 250 and my wife weighs ....... for a total of 425 plus what i keep in the saddlebags. I have over 40,000 miles on my T and i ride on the small roads and Hwy's that the cars don't like to drive on. And yes a lot of the roads are rough roads(goat trails)very little pavement and my shocks still work fine. I have not had a shock go bad on any of my street bikes. Just lucky i guess ROD So many roads so little time !

Posts: 1569 10/21/07 9:03 PM	or calf puller, as some of us in the south call them, you can hang a strap on each of the passenger pegs and hang the com-a-long from a rafter or tree ;^) and lift the back wheel off the ground. I have a jack and adapter, but I rarely use it for work on the rear wheel. Hanging it from the pegs is safer and easier to me. Plus I can leave it hanging in the shop for as long as I need and not worry about someone tipping it over. Rick The "BIKE" is why we came, The "PEOPLE" is why we stay!

Posts: 1904 10/22/07 10:26 AM	I replaced the suspension on my Magna this past summer. As long as you take the load & pressure off the rear suspension, the shocks & springs can be removed without any special tools. A broken mount or shock might present a problem. Maybe a couple of u-bolts to compress the spring while removing the old shock. As for sizing... check out the progressive suspension web site. They offer both std and HD shocks. Only purchase the HD setup if you plan to ride at the manufacturers suggested load limit more than 50% of the time. The consequence is a very stiff ride.

Unless the broken mount has compromised the shocks ability to contain the spring I think I already mentioned to you to watch out for the lengths that progressive gives. my stock shocks where around 12.375" when i took them off this summer. progrisive said they where 11.75". i bought the 12" thinking i was gaining a bit of ground clearance when i actually was losing a bit . also like Andy said one up the HD's are stiff. the top of the line progressives I got where still cheaper than the NOS Honda ones. Posts: 3 10/22/07 7:10 PM	Thanks for you help Duke, I was attempting to adjust the pre-load settings which I have done before without a problem. After making the adjustment on the left side, I went over to the right side and it was binding up. I applied some extra leverage and the bottom pivot fitting which appears to be a casting, gave way. I won't be able to really inspect it until I get it off the bike, but it looks like there was a hollow spot in the casting. This might be the time to consider some Progressive shocks. Neil
