Posts: 1509 01/28/07 11:55 PM	Tags : None When you stop to get off the bike, how do you kill the engine? I always use the switch and never use the "Kill Switch". Seems that some think this is wrong and you should always use the "kill Switch". The reason for this is, so that you keep both hands on the bars until the engine is dead. The reason I don't use the "Kill Switch is because my Buddy uses his and frequently steps off the bike, removes his helmet and walks away forgetting to turn the switch off. I don't want to take the chance of doing this and the bike being dead when I get back on it. The BIKE is why we came, the PEOPLE is why we stay!

Posts: 1901 01/29/07 1:33 AM	Rick, I used to always kill my engine with the key switch, then after taking a MSF course changed my ways. I try to get a ritual for both starting and ending a ride. When I'm ready for a ride I start at the front of the bike, look to remove the disc lock, unlock the fork, unlock my helmet, put the key in the ignition switch, set the kill switch to run then fire up the bike. I adopted this routine after a couple of failed attempts to ride with a disc lock in place and with the forks locked. It also gives me a chance to give my bike a once-over before the ride. When I'm stopping I kill the bike with the kill switch, turn off the key, secure my helmet and gear then pull the key and put it in my pants pocket. Once I put the key in my coat pocket, put my coat in the trunk and somehow the trunk locked. Fortunately I had a spare key hidden on the bike. Andy

That way it obveiated making it easier for someone to come up and "fiddle" with even the Harley because I always had the switch to the locked position before pulling the key out of the switch. I always thought the Harley design of its ignition switch assembly desrved several worst of awards. Lou

Posts: 5696 01/29/07 5:11 AM	Rick, after taking the MSF courses I changed from switching the ignition off to hitting the kill button. Sometime after that I started using the kickstand to stop the engine. That way I never forget to put the kickstand down. I do occasionally forget to turn the ignition off. On those rare occasions when I forget usually someone tells me the head light is on. Like Andy, I have a routine and I try to follow that routine every time so that I do not forget anything. Fred

Interesting thing: The Valkyrie owners manual say to "Turn off the engine using the ignition switch. Only use the Kill Switch in case of emergency." The ingintion switch on the Valk is on the right side of the bike. I alway park in first gear, reach down, while holding in the clutch and turn off the key. Then switch off the gas. It is very important to turn off the gas on a Valkyrie to prevent "hydrolock". Posts: 1509 01/29/07 10:35 PM	I usually try to have the bike in nuetral when I come to a complete stop. Killing it with the kickstand means that the bike must still be in gear. Do yall leave the bike in gear until the next ride? I have always left mine in nuetral. May not be a good idea. I would like to hear the pro's to leaving it in gear. HSATF 1st Officer Posts: 638 01/29/07 10:48 PM	I shut it off with the kickstand, always. If I'm shutting it off, I'm prolly getting off the bike. Even if not, I'm planning to be stopped long enough that I don't want to hold it upright the whole time. Always park your bike in gear. You don't have a parking brake (except maybe Dan's draggon trike). Leaving it in gear prevents the bike from rolling forward off the kickstand. duke

HSATF 1st Officer Posts: 3538 01/30/07 4:30 AM	I used to use the key, but since buying the Wing I started using the kickstand to kill the engine and leave it in 1st to park. I started doing this because the stand is almost hidden on the Wing and I have forgotten a couple of times to put it down. After almost dropping it twice, I decided to change my ways. The Wing is not a bike you want to drop. By leaving it in gear the chance for an accidental roll off is eliminated. Dan, I saw a trike at the Trail of Tears that was using a small bungy cord wrapped around the brake lever and grip for a makeshift parking brake. "They" make a thing that you can clamp down the brake lever with, then put a lock on it.
