Leaving the house the other day I heard a noise that sounded just
like worn out brake pads but when I applied the brake the sound stayed the same.I took my Tourer to my bike guy and we put it on the lift -started the motor
and put it in gear.With the back wheel spinning it was still hard to tell where the noise was coming from so we threw some brake pad on since they were shot
anyway.That wasn't it.To make along story short it was the maintenance free driveshaft.He pulled it out and it was all dirty rusty and dry of lubrication.
That was it I ran about 300 miles this past weekend and everything is fine.I have 28000 miles on my bike so if your getting close to that and you need a back
tire I'd pull the diveshaft out!!!!!!!!!!!! see ya southsidebob

Have you ever changed or added gear oil to the drive shaft housing?? I usually drain and add new early each year. Glad you found the problem. Ride safe. Putz |

Ya I change the final drive once a year but there is no lube points to the driveshaft and I believe there is universal joints in there,see ya

Bob,
I do change the rear drive oil as recommended in the Service Manual and I repack the gears with grease every time I change the rear tire, but in 71,000 miles I have never pulled the driveshaft out and looked at it. So far, I have not had any reason to, but thanks for the warning.

The last time I experienced rear end noise on my motorcycle, I fixed it with a couple of Gas-X tablets.

The last time I had a noise in the back, I just had my wife quit talking. Cleared right up!!

The last time I had rear end noise, I moved farther away from Stan and Marsha too.
It's possible that Marsha got a raw deal, since I was taking the word of Dan, which we all know can be a serious mistake. Sometimes it's hard to tell which end is talking since they both sound about the same. 
Just kidding... maybe... I suppose I could apologize and "blow" you a kiss. Are you guys happy now, you have stolen another thread.

Apparently this is not the same as changing the oil in the rear drive? What to you have to do to get to the drive shaft lube?
