I got as far as pulling the left crankcase cover off but it seems stuck on the bottom. Possibly the on the shift shaft. It's getting late, so I'll
start again tomorrow. Is it supposed to pull out or did I forget to take something off?

Never mind. A quick jiggle and a hard pull got it off. But getting the old gasket off is a pain.

To loosen old gaskets sometimes spray-on fabric softener works...... old wallpaper too. On very old gaskets like 20 years and older it helps to fracture em a
bit with a LIGHT ball peen hammer.... 6 oz...... carefully....... before spraying and waiting overnight. Sometimes...... sometimes...... leaving the part in
the freezer a few hours can help. I fought growed on gaskets for way over 30 years and they can be boogers.
