98T Using oil? |
Lead | ||
|
Well I just got back from a trip to Sturgis. Before I left I checked my oil level and it was 1/2 qt low after 1500 miles or so from last oil change. Used
another 1/2 qt getting to Sturgis (1400 mi). I purchased the T in March of this year and am surprised and a bit shocked to find it using that much oil. I have
read a thread that Fred posted and he reports the same. Is this the norm for these bikes or what? Do you guys always carry an extra qt in the trunk? I have
owned other bikes a long time ago and don't remember them using oil. Sturgis was crazy as usual.

Thank goodness mine wasn't the only T in Sturgis! Where did you stay? I was at Glencoe. Did you see any other T's? I didn't.

Yeah I saw one turquoise over cream riding 2 up at a gas station in deadwoood or central city I think. I did not have time to talk to them. I was riding with a
large group and they were lined up ready to leave for Spearfish. Yeah I took a lot of heat for several days. On the last day I finally came unglued on my
riding buddies and shut em up for good... It was a great time, 2000 miles total from Kansas City and back. Was staying in some ones yard at 709 Glover, first
street to the east off the first I-90 exit to Sturgis.

Jeff,
I make it a point to check my oil every time the odometer clicks off another thousand miles. That way I remember to top it off at regular intervals. I am suspecting that the way my Honda and some others use oil depends partly on the way the combustion chamber is designed and probably partly on the way it is broken in. I am thinking part of the fault is the design because no cars I have owned in the last 20 years ever burned oil even when they have well over 100,000 miles on them, so it must be that the technology exists to built pistons, rings, valves, seals and cylinders that are "oil-tight". I have not investigated Honda's cylinder design compared to those of either other motorcycle engines or automobile engines. Regarding how my engine was broken-in, I suspect by the tire wear when I bought the bike it was broken-in very gently, just as Honda recommends. However, many others with vast experience, say a bike should either be ridden hard when new to seat the rings and valves, or at least ridden like you normally would ride the bike. That's what I will be doing if I ever buy a new bike. I have two Honda engines, my T's V-Twin, and my Nighthawk's in-line four. They both burn oil. At least they do not leak oil or anything else.

My 98 uses oil. Not sure the rate, but it's not bad and seems to use more when I ride on the interstate than just futzin' around town. No leaks and the
plugs are not oil fouled so it's all good.

I'VE HAD MY "T" FOR ONLY 2 1/2 YEARS, BUT HAVE ONLY EVER ADDED ABOUT 1/4 OF A LITRE BETWEEN OIL CHANGES.THE FURTHEST I'VE GONE IN ONE DAY
WOULD ONLY BE ABOUT ABOUT 500KMS.(300 MILES).IT HAS ABOUT 50,000 KMS ON HER.

Well I guess it is comforting to know that I am in the majority and not in the minority. I really thought that I had bought a lemon. Its really hard to check
it also trying to sit on it straight up and fiddle with the dip stick. I get different readings every time I check it. Question, the low oil level light on
the gauge, does any one know how much is left if it comes on? I have not seen mine come on but it would be nice to know if it does where am I at and how many
miles are left untill I am doing damage. Guess I will just always carry an extra qt like I did to SD.

Jeff, the first time I knew I was burning oil I was on a trip and I heard the valves tapping. I stopped and poured almost 2 quarts of oil in the crankcase.
The oil pressure light never came on. That's when I started checking every 1000 miles. Honda does not consider oil usage a problem until your engine is
burning 2 quarts every 1000 miles. Ain't that a kicker? Mine burns 1 quart every 1500-2500 miles.

Jeff,
I have a 2000 T and mine also uses oil. No leaks, no smoke from the pipes, and it only uses about 3/4 of a quart every 2k miles. I try to check it often, but sometimes when I forget the gearbox tells me, or I hear my valves tap. Mine will shift a bit louder if the oil is too low or too old. It's been that way for the past 25k miles, so I don't worry about it anymore. Mike |

Mine also uses about 1 qt every 2000 miles. Extended high speed running will use a little more. Ditto if the oil is getting well used and near changing..I
don't worry about it and keep a qt with me..Bob <><

V-twins in general tend to use a little oil. The only exception is neither of my Suzuki 800 V-twin's used any oil at all between changes. Less than a qt.
every 1000 miles is considered OK by most engine manufacturers. A pint in 1500 miles is considered minor.

My T never consumed oil when I ran Castrol actevo 10-40. My last oil change I figured I'd try their 20-50 for the hot months and I just had to add 1/2 qt.
after 3000 miles. I usally gets changed at 4000 mile and this is the first time I had to add oil between changes. I guess the T does not like the heavier oil.
It had no effect on shift quality.

Mine was just the opposite. When I switched from the Valvoline 10w-40 M/C oil to the Castrol 20w-50 GTX, my oil consumption and noises went down..hmmmmm..
guess they all have different preferences....Bob <><

My 98 T uses lots and lots of oil. No leaks and no oil on the plugs. Where it is going is out the exhaust, in droplets. There is no visible smoke but if I
put a towel or rag up behind the bike when i rev it, I get lots of little spots. This is very noticable on the left exhaust which I assume is cooler since it
does not get as much 'flow' given how the crossover works (or doesn't).
By lots of oil i mean a quart every thou or so. Now I do ride hard, with high revs when in the mountains and high speed on the highway, but this is really sort of irritating and seems to be on the increase. I am wondering since there is no smoke, no oil on plugs and i can see no evidence the oil is burning: could the oil be coming from somewhere other than by the rings and still end up in the exhaust???? I don't know engine mechanicals, but since the T has hydraulic lifters (this is good since we don't need to adjust) could the oil be coming from the valve stems or some such place. !?!? And like Fred I am frequently reminded by tapping that it is time to add oil, lots of it. Any ideas out there guys and gals?????????? |

Poor crank case ventilation can cause oil blow-by. This happened on a pick-up that I previously had owned. Started around 100k miles and progressively got
worse. I didn't find the cause until I contacted a GM certified mechanic about it. Turned out the the PCV valve hose had vacuum, but not enough of it. It
was partially clogged by carbon that had built up under the throttle body plate near the vacuum port. I'm thinking there is a vinyl tube on our bikes that
needs to cleaned out periodically. Just could be the culprit.
