Shell decided to test their new CJ4 formulations due to the high volume of questions received from bike owners. The old formulations didn't pass due to higher than allowable ash content. But restrictions on ash and sulfur content for 2007 and later on-road diesels caused them to change the formulation. The new 15W40 does pass JASO MA, and the new 5W40 synthetic which will be introduced in a month or so also passes. And because bikers comprise less than one one hundredth of one percent of all Rotella purchases, the price will not be increasing. Again, this applies only to Rotella oils that meet CJ4 specifications as shown on the back of the package. The newer version packages state that it passes CJ-4 specs. on the back label.
