HSATF Tail Gunner Posts: 116 09/14/07 1:23 PM	Tags : None so last saturday morning i hopped on my T in st. louis and headed out for a 1000 miles in 24 hours. i left around 6.30am, rode south to memphis tn before lunch, then on to nashville tn, up to lexington ky to arrive around dinner. i stopped in a suburb there to have dinner with a relative, then headed west thru louisville, indiana, illinois and back to st. louis at 2.00am. if i hadn't stopped for a couple hour visit, i would have made it in 17-1/2 hour or so (1050 miles). i've sent in my application to the iba for verification. they say on the website it takes some time for their turn-around time (anyone able to relate their experience?). not that long ago, i read ron ayres "against the wind" and it sounds absolutely crazy. 11,000 miles in 11 days? that's crazy talk. but at the same time, i found the desire inside to have a little taste of that crazy (afterall, i've also done some mountain hiking that some call me crazy for as well). i had a great time, and would like to spend more time riding long distances, but would like the time to stop and take some photos and enjoy the scenery at a little more casual pace. craig (mountain hiker/biker)

Posts: 2266 09/14/07 1:45 PM	Congratulations Craig....1,000+ miles in less than 24 hours! Absolutely amazing. My hats off to you. My candy-ass body/mind is good for about 350 miles a day. For me that is a perfect day. You may want to chat with Fedspaz...Kirk from Iowa. He has done some of that multi-day Ironbutt riding. He and Sis visited us last summer and had some great stories to tell. Keep us updated...there are a number of Candy Asses here on the board that like to hear the stories. Bob

I departed my home in Corpus Christi, TX at 0200 on Jul 19th and rode north to OK City then turned east for Millington, TN where I ended my first leg of 1099 miles at 2103 that evening. Got up the next morning to meet up with other Pelians for a ride to Clarksdale, MS for a great weekend at Ground Zero Blues Club. Departed Clarksdale, MS on Sunday morning Jul 22nd at 0500 and headed back home. Due to the heat, heavy rains, and having to straddlewalk my T for nearly 2 hours in Austin, I arrived back home 1093 miles later at 0330 Monday morning. Took me long to get home, but was well worth the ride. I do enjoy a slow leisurely ride as well as anybody else, but sometimes I just have to go for a ride and listen to the voices in my head. I am a Patchholder in a club called Wild Pelicans and one of our Patchholders sent his paperwork in Aug 2006 and still has not received his certification back yet. However, they were kind enough to take his money though. IBA is backlogged for about 18 months. The Wild Pelicans certify LD rides and for $25, you receive a nice pin, certificate, certification number and your name on the website. Average turn around time is less than 2 weeks in most instances. For more info visit our website at: www.wildpelicans.net. Posts: 589 09/17/07 9:44 AM	congrats on the ride. They are slow getting their certificates out. It took about 6 months before I got my Lake Michigan ride cert. My parents are still waiting for theirs (this was in July '06). So be patient. The best thing is just forget about it, then one day in the mail... SURPRISE!!!! I've done 3 different IBA rides so far (waiting for cert on one of them). It's a fun challenge for the "crazy". If you really enjoy LD riding, might I suggest doing a rally some time. They have shorter rallies around. It's a fun way to ride long distances. It's kinda like a scavenger hunt (with a polaroid camera) seeing some neat out of the way places you'd probably never hear about otherwise. I did a 7 day rally and had a ball. Posts: 589 09/20/07 9:11 AM	funny, on the tourer, doing the LD rides, my backside hurts until it goes numb and quits complaining. On my CBR, I don't have that problem. I'm assuming it's the riding position and my weight not being all on my butt. As far as Rallies... I'm hoping TeamStrange does another MN1K, I'd like to join in on that. Otherwise I'll probably do one of the GLMC rides... http://www.glmc.org/ Both are based in the Midwest. I'll let you know when it gets closer to Spring on my plans. How interesting.....my first duty station in the Air Force in 1967 was in Grand Forks, ND. I've been to Fargo many times visiting or just driving through. My living experience in the Dakotas was a memorable one. The winters were horrendous and the people were fabulous. It was a much slower life style than I was use to and when I returned home to New York State I could not figure out why everyone was in such a rush. My best memories of living there were the Indian Summers, sub-zero winters and the flooding of the Red River. alepel

Posts: 589 09/20/07 3:25 PM	NDSU... the Thundering Herd... I went to Augie in SF... rivals back in the day. I have a stock seat. that's most of the problem right there. I've tossed around the idea of getting something else, but spend the money on other things. I hope we get a chance to run one of those rallies together. Would be a hoot. What is the exhaust on your bike... most rallies have a "noise" level rule. You can't run load bikes basically. Keep your knees in the breeze! -Kirk

With the exception of a roadtrip with my son tomorrow for a football game tomorrow, I will be available anytime. I ended up with a three day weekend because I had to give up my days off Mon and Tue because the Lowe's I work at had a visit by the new Regional VP on Tuesday. I ended up with 16 hours overtime so I've spent the last two days coming in late and leaving early to ensure that I would not have any overtime. Three months ago I was written up for milking the store for the incredible amount of 2 minutes overtime in one week. We have a manager that spent 25 years working for Wallyworld and tries to run Lowe's the same way. Uhh...the average shopper at Wallyworld is not looking for advice on how to install a ceiling fan, install a toilet, or build a deck....it's just not the same shopper. HSATF Tail Gunner Posts: 116 09/21/07 12:29 PM	alepel, yes, there are definitely great & awful things about north dakota. the summers can be very hot and winters...well there are few places around (outside of where our canadian friends are up north) that have winters as harsh. i've seen -40 degrees f, with a minus 80 degree f with wind-chill...it's just plain dangerous. and don't get me started about blizzards (whiteouts). i often say our (nodak's) main export is 1) its agriculture and 2) its youth (like me for example, i left immediately after college). but you're right, the people are the best. very friendly, willing to give you the shirt off their back. and there's a lot to be said for a slower pace of lifestyle. cost of living is very reasonable (go figure), average lifespan is higher than national average, good health care...all that being said, i don't see myself retiring there, nor would my wife allow us to! kirk, yep, the thundering herd, or the bison (pronounced bi-zen). in the early '80s we had a terrific football team. i remember a number of games, freezing my butt off, but keeping warm with some "antifreeze" we snuck in with. they've moved up a level a few years ago. not sure that was a very good idea, now they're at the bottom of their division. i'm too cheap (thus far) to get an aftermarket seat too, also have stock exhaust. remarkable really how quiet the bike is. my last bike ('88 shadow 800, just like alepel) had quite a throaty sound. my wife could always hear me coming home on that one. before that i had a '82 kawasaki 440 ltd with a belt drive (rather than chain). that one was whisper quiet! hey tex, i understand the problem you're talking about with overtime. unfortunately, being on salary, i get to work 10+ hours every day...my dad is arriving in town for a visit (down from fargo) this weekend. depending on what we end up doing, i'll be calling sometime. i do want to hear more about them wild pelicans...oh, by-the-way, nice page you have set up. craig (mountain hiker/biker) Last Edited By: mtn hiker biker 09/21/07 12:34 PM. Hey Craig....do they still have "snirt" storms out there. For those of you unfamiliar with the term snirt, it is a combination of Snow and Dirt. First time I saw what this was came after I walked in the house from outside and across the living room carpet I left perfect impressions of my feet formed in snow. The snow and dirt layer themselves and feel off one layer of snow at a time for each foot so that you get these perfect snow made footprints when you walk on something warm. What's really neat is that you can go right back and pick each one up to throw them away. alepel
