When riding on the highway, at around 65-or faster depending on speed limit, when I let off the throttle, such as slowing to exit, I sometimes get a loud
backfire 
. It usually is only one loud bang, then just the normal sound of the engine winding down through the mufflers. It doesn't happen all the
time, but I don't know what causes it. I've changed the plugs, and the old ones all looked normal for wear, no carbon, fuel, oil, or burn markings. I
run 87 octane in the bike, and have checked my Clymer manual, and can find nothing that covers this particular problem. It does sometimes seem as if it happens
more often right after I've throttled up, then down, such as in a passing situation. Any ideas out there?

If you're describing one loud "BANG!" and not the decel popping and burble typical of low-restriction mufflers when the carbs haven't been
rejetted, I'll relate an experience I had with my old bike.
The petcock vacuum diaphragm had torn and the engine was drawing extra fuel in through the vacuum port. On decel, the extra fuel would pass through the engine unburned and when it hit the hot metal of the muffler, it would ignite and make a LOUD backfire. Like a gunshot loud.

I don't think our T's have the vacuum petcock, do they? My Nighthawk had one because it was gravity feed, but our T's have a fuel pump instead. I
could be wrong, but the one way to tell is to look for a vacuum line connected to the petcock.

Did someone figure out what climbingwalls problem was? I am very interested. My bike does the same thing. Just as you barely barely barely give throttle the
backfire occurs.
