Mountain Tourer Tank Bag (???) |
Lead | ||
|
Roger.....I happen to be looking at the photo of your Touer in the slide show and I noticed the tank bag that you had. I also noticed that it is the magnetic
variety. I been so close to buying one of these but the magnetic attachment always concerns me. I wondered if you could tell me if you have noticed any
scratching of the tank using the magnetic type of tank bag? Does the bag stay in place when your riding? Is there anything that you do not like about the bag
or would do differently given the chance. I'd appreciate whatever you could tell me about it.
Thank you.

Al,
I have a Nelson Rigg tank bag which I use with my Magna. In addition to the pockets and large storage area, it also has a plastic map cover. I like the tank bag so I can keep my wallet, registration, keys, cell phone, sun screen, camera and other small items handy. I need to keep my parking garage pass/id card handy when I ride to work. The magnetic tabs can and will scratch the paint, unless you are really carefull when removing the bag. So far I have not lost the bag while riding. I remove the bag before re-fueling so I don't accidentially cover it with gas. The only interferance seems to be when I'm parking my bike. When I turn the bars all the way to the left, sometimes the horn button hits the bag and scares the nearby pedestrians. Andy |

The magnetic tabs can and will scratch the paint, unless you are really careful when removing the bag. Thanks Andy. Can you tell me if the design of your tank bag has the magnets on the outside. In other words do the magnets come in direct contact with the tank or are they encased in the material of the bag. I have been told that some tank bags with the magnets sewn into the fabric still manage to scratch paint. But I have not heard this directly from anyone that owns a bag like that. My thinking is that if the magnets are sewn in, the tank should be protected. Unless of course it is better to put a barrier between the tank and the magnet, like say a sheet of saran wrap. I'm really not so interested in the size of the bag. A small bag would be nice, but I primarily want a plastic map cover feature like the one Fred featured for us once on this forum. I know that Divco sells a nice small tank bag with map window and the magnets are sewn into this really soft material, that Divco says protects the tank "perfectly". I avoided buying one last year at Americade, but I may HAVE to buy one this year. My brother uses one on his Magna when we go to Americade and ride around the Adirondacks and he loves it.

Al,
The magnets are sewn into a pocket and do not come directly into contact with the bike. However the material is course enough to cause some damage. |

Alepel,
The magnets are sewn into my tank bag as well. I think it is this one. The material that touches the tank is rubberised. The rubber seems to rub off a bit on the tank under the magnets but that cleans up when I wax it. However there is one problem I've had (only once in 3 years) one of the magnets picked up a small chunk of metal (probably a chip from drilling a hole or something) it became lodged in the rubberised material and scratched my tank. I thought I had been being careful about keeping the bottom of the bag clean but will need to be extra careful. Tony |

Alepel,
I love my tank bag. Like the others my magnets are sewn in some soft material. When removing, I make sure I lift straight up as not to damage the paint. Good point by tonythecarguy, when I set it down, even on pavement, I always set it upside down. Otherwise the magnets will pick up metal pieces. It is a great piece of gear, that holds everything from maps, cellphone, the invaluable camera etc. I can highly recommend getting one. Hope that helped Roger

Roger / Tony.....thanks for your insights. I would not have thought about the magnets picking up debris until after it happened to me. Now you've given us
advanced warning.
Thanks for the info.

I use a magnetic map holder and will echo their recommendations. Never drag it around to reposition it, always lift if off and relocate. If you get caught in
the rain, try to dry underneath the bag and remove it as soon as possible to let the moisture out. Moisture trapped under the bag magnets can actually get
underneath the paint. DAMHIK.

It's important also to keep the road grime cleaned off every chance you get if riding in dust or rain. The grit from the road grime can get between the
magnets pressure points and wear on the paint little by little. But, as long as you don't go sliding it around then it really does not pose that much of a
problem. Just give the rubber underside of the bag and the tank a quick wipe with a micro cloth rag every other fill up or so and you should do fine. I really
do miss my tank bag.

This is all good advice. I'm a little paranoid about scratching the paint on my T, as I guess all of us would be. Some of you might remember my experience
last year when I rode to Americade. I find after my trip up there that the fringe on my Mustang seat cover is causing a mild abrasion on the top front edge of
my saddlebag lid. I would not have thought the leather fringe was that abrasive, but it was.
So after that experience I want to be careful that I'm not scratching the gas tank with a tank bag because if I do, it will be right under my nose and I'll see it all the time.
