Noise/primery gear |

Well ,I'm getting that lifter sound near the crank -so I hope my diagnosis is right and it is the primary gear.I'm getting it replaced the first of the
week. What I don't understand is why the noise doesn't go away when you pull in the clutch.I thought those springs where there to help with the action
of the clutch

The springs on the primary drive gear are there to keep the gear from chattering like it's doing now. The clutch springs however, do help the clutch
action. We are talking about 2 different sets of springs here. The springs inside the primary gear get weak and allow the gear to rock between the cogs just
enough to make a pinging noise every time a cylinder is on a compression stroke. At the moment you can't buy just the internal springs of the gear, so you
must purchase it as a set.

Well gol dang ! 11, 500 miles and I do an oil change. Wouldn't you know... I suddenly now have what I assume is the primary gear issue. I believe from
previous posts, this is more of an annoyance than a real problem. Reason I say that is I am leaving in three weeks for a 4 thousand mile tripe (or thereabouts)
and do not have the $$ to replace the gear. I really thought I was not going to get hit with the issue as I thought it happened to everyone in the lower mile
range (single digits) oh- well.... luckily I have the Jardines on to kill the soudn (somewhat) of that primary gear.

Enjoy your trip and then fix it when you get back. The gear itself is not bad, just has a enough free play to cause a chatter.

Bob ? Bob ? How did you gear issue end up ?
Did you have a dealer do it or your favorite mechanic ? (yourself possibly ?) how much, all said and done did it run you (if that is not being too nosy?) And most of all - did it take care of the problem ? |

Well,I've rode about 3 tank .I'm starting to wonder now I had no noise but I swear I heard it back again today. So I don't know. I'm starting to
wonder with the gas prices the way they are -are they cheating us on the lubricant in the gas.Are the valves and valve seats getting lubed properly with the
correct amount of additive.I always could run reg gas in the T but know it seem to want high test.I'm getting up early an putting some marvel mystery oil
in the gas tank and taking a little trip.I'll let you know after my trip, bob
Also with parts and labor it was $380.00
