Toy Hauler ... took the plunge |
Lead | ||
|
We were thinking of upgrading to a different camper ... then got the urge to look at a toy hauler. Well .... we ended up purchasing a 26' KZ with the back end that folds down, the power bed raises up, and you drive the bike right in. I got the dealer to install a removable wheel-chock before I picked it up which required dropping one of the tanks that mounts underneath so he could get the proper washers on the bottom side. I'm glad I had him do it ... I might have drilled right through the water tank.

Great purchase Rich. Those toy haulers are very cool. We just sold our camper today because we would rather bike than camp. We have been thinking about a rig like yours so we could do both. Let us know how it works out for you. What will you pull it with? Bob

We pull it with our 99 Ford Expedition. It has plenty of power. But the short wheelbase and higer center of gravity requires the load-leveling hitch to keep it stable on the road. Otherwize it wags it's tail and becomes a white-knuckle towing experience. We towed it home from a few hours away just fine. We haven't made the first real camping/riding trip yet. We'll probably pull it to the Honda Homecoming in Ohio in July.
I have to take both my bike and the sound equipment to a CMA rally later this summer. It should have room to handle the bike and the gear. - Rich |

Nice rig , Rich. I saw one similar to it at the Cycle World International MC show in Atlanta last March. That one was only 16ft long by 7ft wide and only had a toilet in the nose, and the 2 beds you have on each side. The beds on each side doubled as sofas once the bike was out. I can see that yours also has a kitchen-ette up front with the extra 10 feet. I like it.

Real nice. The toy haulers gives you the best of both worlds. Good luck on her maiden voyage.
BTW, Soft Mist and I are looking at a motorhome. Things are in negotiation with the dealer right now. Should know something this coming week if we can see eye to eye on the deal. |

Rich...what a fabulous set up you've got there. The of both worlds for me. Biking and camping on the road and having your motorcycle along for your recreation. I think I'm jealous.
Skip....what kind of motorhome are you looking at? Diane and I have been talking about a motorhome for years. We've narrowed our choice down to a used Winnebago Adventurer. We've been looking at them here in our home town, but found that if we looked at them in really big motorhome towns the prices are better. I know it has to do with the competition. When we looked at Adventurers in the Los Angeles area the prices were much much lower than we found them to be here in New York State. If I was going to buy one today I would be looking in Florida where I find them to be the cheapest of anywhere. Keep us informed of what transpires. Alain |

We've been looking at class c and class a motorhomes for about the last two months. The front runner in all this searching is a class a 1997 Coachman Mirada with 55k miles. Looks and runs great. We're in negotiation with the dealership right now. We'll just have to wait and see if this is the one for us. Should know by Wednesday.

I recently sold my class A motorhome. It was a 1997 30' Rexhall Vision wide body.
Make sure you concider all the ramifications of having one of those things. Aside from the expense of operation, I had to pay to store mine. That thing was bleeding me dry!! I have a 1991 model 19' RoadTrek. It is just the thing for two people and a motorcycle trailer. Dan |

Quote:The first one I ever really looked at was in Los Angeles. It was a 1995, 30+ foot and it was loaded. The unit had 55K miles on it and was listed for $55K. What I liked about it was it ability to store a lot of clothing. I've been an RV'er for about 20 years and I know how important it is to be able to store an adequate amount of clothing. Many of the units today fall really short in the closet department. The 95 I looked at was an early model. Since that time, I'm thinking after 1997 the Adventurer went to the large basement door models. Again another big consideration on my part. The 95 had small storage doors and I've learned that is a nusiance. So I would be in the market for a 2000 or newer. When Diane and I retire we are going to buy one and travel exclusively for at least two years. Kind of getting to know the country and possibly looking for a place to retire. It is not our intention to keep the unit forever because of the depreciation factors. But if we can buy relatively inexpensive, use it for a couple of years and then cash out to buy our retirement home that would be our plan. But of course plans can change. Alain |

Skip....congratulations on the purchase of your motorhome. I did a google search to see what one looked it. I found one and looked over the pictures and it looks like a nice rig.
I suppose that now we can expect to see you at Eureka Springs next year towing your Tourer. Looking forward to seeing the pictures when you get them posted. Alain |

We've got a 1994 Tioga Montara Class C. Kathy and I are the original owners, and we are planning on taking it on the road when I retire in 197 days (but who's counting?) Towing a trailer with the bike or my little Dakota pickup is still being hotly discussed.
Rich, congratulations on your purchase. The toyhaulers draw me in like a magnet whenever I get within 100 yards of one. It's kind of funny. The toyhauler is pulling me in one direction and my wife is pulling me in the other. Skip, I just checked out "Off the Bike". Congratulations on your purchase. It looks real clean. You should get many years of enjoyment out of it. Have you thought of anyplace to add chrome yet? Listening to the interest in RVs on this thread, it sounds like a T/RV get-together might be in order sometime in the future. Robb |
