HSATF Tail Gunner Posts: 72 08/14/07 1:01 PM	Tags : None This is my first year with the "T" and I winter in Arizona so I'm gonna trailer her down. After spending most of my life in Corpus Christi, Tx I really can't handle 6-7 months of rain up here in BC. I priced a Stinger from the only distributor in Canada..... Ontario. The overpriced US$1500 Stinger trailer jumps to Cdn$2950 PLUS GST and PST (14+%)!!!!!!! It gets worse. I found a Kendon in Wa state for US$1200. At the border I need a letter from the manufacturer stating there are no outstanding recalls on that specific trailer. The Registrar of Imported Vehicles gets Cdn$215 to look at the VIN number and I have to get a bogus "inspection". Then I'm taxed GST and PST on the purchase price. I can't register it until the gov't sends me a "compliance sticker" so I have to pay for a "special permit" to tow it from the border to my house. Free trade only goes one way..... FROM Canada TO the US. There is a local Kendon dealer in BC and I'm gonna call for prices. Hello...... UHaul!

Posts: 7574 08/16/07 12:03 PM	Wow Alan.....that is awful! Isn't there some kind of loophole where you could buy a trailer as a resident of Arizona? You must have a residence there too, don't you? Besides that I thought the value of the US dollar and Canadian dollar were getting closer together. Doesn't that account for anything? Let us know how things work out. alepel

HSATF Tail Gunner Posts: 72 08/16/07 1:30 PM	Here's where I'm at. A Kendon single bike trailer is $2580 on the mainland at White Rock. Spare, rock guard, tie downs not included. Plus 14% taxes. And I have to go over to get it...... ferry fares etc about $150! I found a Kendon in the US for $1200 with rock guard, spare, tiedowns. To import into Canada I MUST have a Recall Clearance Letter from Kendom Mfg stating there are no recalls on that specific VIN trailer. Kendon IS NOT willing to issue such a letter. So the trailer is inadmissible to Canada. I may UHaul it down and buy a trailer in Az. Canada absolutely sucks to do any business in. We have the second most corrupt govt in the western hemisphere, right after Colombia. As goes the govt so go the people. Canadians will routinely tackle each other from behind, say "sorry" and think it's OK. Rant over.... for now.

HSATF Tail Gunner Posts: 72 08/22/07 11:37 AM	The trailer saga concludes. Buying a full size trailer is out as I have no extra storage space. The "Stinger" is way too expensive here in Canada.... waaay over $3000. Ditto Kendon new from the local dealer. I found a Kendon in Washington state at a reasonable price, but due to Canadian import regulations and Kendons total unwillingness to write a simple letter to assist me it's not possible to import it to Canada. UHell is my best option. A 5X8 fully enclosed trailer to Yuma will cost about Cdn$265 each way. So after figuring cost of buying, importing, maintaining, registering, etc I can UHell round trip for about the next 4-5 years for the same price. Hook it up, load it w/ "T" and everything my wife can cram in it and drop it. And my relatives can't borrow it...... or me with it. Will a "T" fit in a 5X8?

I have used your logic many many times when I was trying to decide if I wanted to buy something myself. Its sort of the ole 80/20 rule. Why pay for something you think you'll use 80% of the time when actually you will only use it 20% of the time. I really liked your statement about relatives not being able to be borrow it. This is my favorite way to do it and there is no registration or storage problems when not in use. The gas mileage was 17 mpg vs. 13 mpg pulling a trailer. For a little more than what you'll spend on a UHaul rental for one trip, you can own one of these for all your future needs. This is my truck with Stephens T bike in the back at this years Hoot. Then my T on a my previous truck During the Eureka Springs trip last year. This is a 7ft fold up / carry on ramp made by USA Ramps. You can also find them on ebay under Discount Ramps ebay listings. They now come in all aluminum versions in addition to the steel type that I have. I bought the burgundy extra cab truck in the 1st photo this year so that I could eliminate the cargo box on top.
