I don't know how many of ya'll know who Neil Peart is. For those that don't, he is the drummer for Rush. Rush is one of may favorite bands and,
being a drummer myself, Neil is (hands down) my favorite drummer. In my opinion, the best drummer breathing air right now.
That being said, he is also and very good writer and an avid motorcyclist. He has written four books that are about motorcycling and touring with Rush.
Usually, when Rush is on tour, he rides from show to show on his BMW. Usually with a riding partner. He has ridden in places I will never even see.
Anyway. He is a very interesting guy. I am reading his fourth book now. If anybody is into reading about motorcycling, even if your not into music or not a
Rush fan, give him a read.
"The Masked Rider", "Ghost Rider", "Traveling Music", and "Roadshow".

What about Ryan Lacey of Gaelic Storm? He doesn't even bother with sticks.
Now there's a fun hard working band. Don't try to keep up drinking with them...

Nope.
None of those guys are worthy of carrying Peart's sticks. The only drummer of equality to Peart, was his idol, Buddy Rich. Ofcourse, that is just my opinion. Music is a personal thing. I was never a fan of The Dead. And there are few bands that have come around, lately, that I much care for. And that's the way it usually happens. My dad hated my my long hair, hippie music because, to him, music was Faron Young, Ernest Tubbs and the like. He was very closed minded on the subject. I happen to like a very wide variety of music. But. Back to the intension of the thread. Which is about the motorcycling books, not my opinion's on music or musicians. Peart's book's are good reading for the rider in all of us. -Dan

I had heard that Peart had written a series of books. I'll have to do a seach of Amazon and see what's available. Thanks Dan.
BTW, In my opinion Peart rewrote the book on what a rock drummer should be. I have been a Rush fan since thier debut album, even though Peart wasn't the drummer back then. "We want to be free... Free to ride our machines without being hassled by the man!" |

Neil's website has some pics of him and friends riding (the July update shows them rolling down a hilly gravel road in the midst of a beautiful woods),
with some short updates on where they've been riding.

The really interesting part of going to a Rush concert is the fact that what they play on stage, is almost a perfect recreation of what you hear on their
recordings. They are very technical.

Dan,
It's amazing how many similarities flow between the members of this forum. I've always been a Rush fan, all the way from the mid-70's when I first discovered the band. Rush was a welcome breath of fresh air in the 'Disco' era. Not to date myself too much, but I remember paying $8.00 for second row seats to the first Rush show in Cleveland. Held at a small hall I can remember two things: - They set up on a white carpet and the stage seemed to be filled with a drum set (and a couple of amps) - After the concert I could not hear for 2-3 days (ahh, the good old days). I never knew that Neil authored a few books or was interested riding. I'm going to check out his books. Andy |

I love Rush concerts. Try to always catch them when they are in Houston.
