I've looked into a 6-speed and different gearing, primarily looking for some better fuel economy.
Ran into one goldwing thread that indicated the gearing was designed to keep the engine rpms up. This kept the engine running at an optimal tempurature, keeping the valves and engine free of deposits. Not sure if I buy the story or if the same theory would apply to a v-twin. Any way, the kits are out there but making a change for the sake of better fuel economy does not hold much value. Assuming 2k to convert; 40 mpg with the stock setup, and hoping to get 50 mpg with better gearing; and also assuming gas at $2.80/gallon; the break even point would be 130,000 miles down the road. |

Excellent point on the return-on-investment angle. But getting better gas mileage also means getting better range out of a tank of fuel. That can be worth the
price of admission depending on where you ride.
