Altitude on a T |

I know that some of you guys have been out West with your T's, and I'm just wondering if any of you have ridden in the Rockies. I am afraid to take my
T over 8,000 ft. because I think I would burn a valve when the carbs started running rich. I would love to hit Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mtn. Nat. Park, but
it's way over 10,000 ft. Any thoughts???? Am I wrong to be concerned? Let's hear from some knowledgeable folks.

A richer mixture won't increase the risk of burning a valve.
A lean mixture runs hot. The heat is dissipated thru all the components in the combustion chamber and exhaust to the cooling system or the atmosphere. Exhaust valves can be at risk of burning in elevated combustion temperatures because the thin lip at the edge that is exposed when the valve is opened and lifted off the valve seat (the intake valve is cooled by the incoming air/fuel mixture). Exhaust "blueing" can also result from a lean mixture. A richer mixture can foul the plugs and cause misfire. The excess carbon can also clog a catalytic equipped exhaust system (no worries for the Tourer). My suggestion; bring an extra set of plugs that are hotter than the normal ones (should be a lower number). If you start to have problems with misfiring, swap them in.

climbingwall,
I ride the Colorado Rocky Mountains all the time, and I have no problems with it. I have yet to replace the spark plugs, so I can not say for sure, but I believe I have the default, factory plugs on there (I bought the bike used). I have had it up to the top of Mt Evans (14,000ft), Trail Ridge Road, and just about any other mountain pass in Colorado you can name. Just get out there and enjoy it!

I forgot about Mt. Evans, at 14,240 feet it's America's highest paved road. Can you tell i like the mountain's both in the car or bike. When it
get's over 100* here in the valley it's nice and cool(60* to 75*) at 8000+ ft. up on top of the mountain's. We just took a ride up to about 7400
ft. last weekend, yes it was cold(mid 30's) but OMG was it pretty up there, the air was so clean you could see for well over 80/100 miles.

I just have to say this: After 62 posts, I think it is about time that you graced us with some kind of real image for your login. If you are actually in a witness protection program, just forget I said anything. Your comments about the mountains make me think of the lyrics from a Drifters tune: "on the roof, that's the only place I know, where you just have to wish to make it so". I always considered the outdoors as good therapy and that goes doubly for the mountains. I would like to try out your mountains some time. I don't think it will be this year, but I would like to consult you about places to go and possibly riding together some time. David
