So I hooked up with the Amsoil rep at the Cycle World show in Chicago yesterday. I asked him straight up, "I have a water-cooled motorcycle, why should I
spend more for your oil?". I told him I run 10-40 Pennzoil without friction modifiers. He told me that even though it's water cooled, my bike runs
hotter than a car engine, (It doesn't. Most cars today have 205 degree thermostats. I'm pretty sure our T's have a 180.) it has higher compression
than car engines, (It doesn't. We all know the T has an 8:1 ratio.) so I'm thinking this guy's full of hooey.
Then he starts talking about viscosity loss due to oil shear by the transmission gears. He showed me a report they had done by an independent agency that showed their full-syn 10-40 had the least viscosity loss over 5000 miles and the report named names! Royal Purple was the worst. After 5000 miles 10-40 RP is a 20 weight oil.
Now I'm starting to rethink this whole oil thing. The longest I go between changes is the Sturgis trip, around 3000 miles. I always change oil before I leave and when I come back, and again at the end of the season. How about it, Amsoil fans? Should I make the switch?
