I've heard on this site and others that we use all levels of octane. What do you use.

There was a great thread somewhere in this forum by BuzzyDBiker who educated me that 87 octane is actually a higher combustable than the higher level octanes. I didn't know that. I made my mind up as I did notice my bike always ran better with 87.

We have a SUNOCO franchise of gas stations here that offer 94 octane.. I want to put that in my bike and see what happens!

When I fill up its at most 3.5 gallons. I don't mind paying the extra 10 or 20 cents per gallon for the good stuff.

I agree with CleRider, for the little amount of gas at each fill up it isn't that much more expensive to use the highest octane.

I've run over 12000 foot mountains loaded with passenger and gear for a week....75 mph all day on freeway...slow rides through scenic parks and have tried ALL grades of gasoline. I for the life of me can not tell the difference between high octane and regular...

I second that Dave I tried different grades too found no difference in performance and mileage.

Elevation plays a large part in which grade to used, due to the fuel air ratio. That is why you will see 86 octane at the pumps in the mountains. I use 89 around home, which is about sea level, and drop down as the elevation goes up. Not for the cost savings but because it burns better. Above 6000 feet the recommendation is to use 87 or below if your vehicle normally requires 91 octane.

For what it's worth, a motorcycle wrench told me not to use anything higher than 89 or 90 octane in a bike.

I might go down a notch and see if it makes a difference.

I have always gone with the 93 octane.
Runs great and have had no problems to date.

middle or high oct for me | #14 | ||
|
I always thougtht the higher octane was "purer" or cleaner I always use AMOCO for car and bike.
One thing my car dealer told me to do when I bought my pickup truck, "use the 87 Octane only and you will never have a problem, no need to put the higher in ever" well I have done that for close 20,000 miles and no problems so far! (note I said the pick up truck not the bike) |

I used to run high but have read and watched enough reports that like the 3000K mile oil change, a complete myth. I started using 87 instead of 93 back in 1994 and noticed no difference in performance or mileage in any of my vehicles.
I saved a few petroleum products bucks for addition of more "safety chrome". Now if you really want to increase mileage and performance it's a proven fact chrome is more aerodynamic and offers greater visibility than painted surfaces. In addition one doesn't impress friends and admirers with lines like I run 98 octane and change my oil every 200 miles, near as well as 400 pounds of blinding chrome sparkle. Add a few dozen lights and waala, you have achieved internal and external bliss. Motorcycling isn't a hobby it's an addiction and obsession. |
