exhaust modification |

Has anyone had experience cutting off the piglets on the stock exhaust for improved sound? I just aquired a nice used 98 Ace Tourer in mint condition with 2525 miles on it. I wanted to improve the exhaust note slightly. My husband cut the piggys off his Valkyre Tour and was pleased with the result. I don't want to make a mistake if it's going to sound bad(poor).

Congrads on new bike, and welcome to forum. I think you will like both!
Not sure what piggies are but several people have drilled holes in the back plate (& I think inner baffle)you could do a "search" on the item. I'm sure latter on some one will post on this string. It (muffler) is a very comomn mod. most people make. I went with a slip on (Jardine rumblers) Wow 601 post's I'v been promoted to 1st officer. I will try to be a good 1st officer and refrain from pissing people off for at least the next 24 hrs. just dont mention shaving and we should be ok. Dang I might have just pissed someone off already, I should shut up.

After drilling the back plate and baffle, I thought cutting the "piggies", (I assume you mean the short, slightly downward bent end pipe?) would help. NOT! The exhaust sounded tinnie(bad) and I had to do a major modification to get it to sound good.

pecosjoe,
yes, by cutting the piggy I meant after removing the rear end cover, the little pipe that comes off the rear baffle. I understand you did this but it sounded tinny?!? How about leaving it alone and just drilling holes around it? |

First of all welcome to our forum MaryAce. I did a lot of mods to my original T mufflers. First I drilled four 3/8" diameter holes in each muffler. Then a few weeks later I drilled four more in each one. Each time the sound got a little better. The next step was to remove the "piggy". I didn't have the tinny sound after removing it. I ran the mufflers for about a year like this and then I did the full muffler surgery. Cutting the end cpa off each muffler and completely removing all baffles. The complete process is here on the board somewhere. I think it is in the Mod and Customizing forum. I'll look for it and post the link. I was completely happy with the sound and performance of the T after surgery. The only carb mod I had to do was tweek the fuel/air mixture screws.

Here's the thread on muffer mods. This may be more than you really want to know.

I ended up doing what Skip did. When I cut the "piggy" I only took about half of it off and the fiberglass packing blew out. This probably accounted for the tinny sound. Doing the full modification like Skip posted with a K&N air filter, improved performance and the carbs were runnig a little rich to begin with so there was no adjustment needed. I heard some V&H Dual baggers on a T at the dealers. Sound is very nice, but really not $500. better sounding than the mod. Skip is describing.

Hello everyone, I did the total clean out of the T's mufflers! I am very pleased with the results, however I went 1 step further. (wanted more sound from left pipe) If you remove the left pipe you will find a diverter plate that allows 80% of the rear cylinder exhaust out the right pipe! To solve this I purchased a quality paste muffler repair kit. Using rubber gloves I applied paste to this plate filling all the holes. (don't use alot of pressure this will just keep pushing it through) After appling several coats, success! I now have the same amount of exhaust coming from both pipes! The sound is awsome! I hope this helps anyone that wants a tuned sound.
