Mufflers welded in place. What do I have?? |

Just purchaced Hightowers T from Camden TN. Got it home and needed to replace the rear tire. Started tearing it down this afternoon after receiving my
replacement. The first thing I noticed was the right side muffler would not come off. There were tack welds all up and down the exahust from the U joint back.
Prior owner said the shield fell off on a ride once and he had it welded back on. Well all the shields have been welded now that I have had time to take a
closer look. I had to grind the tack welds down and just pry the thing off breaking the welds. On closer inspecting it appears that possibly the mufflers (not
original) were welded into the original shields?? The other thing is the right side muffler has holes around the exhaust opening and the left side does not.
Also the right side puts out 75% of the total exhaust, and noise. The left side is less noise and much less exhaust. Can anybody shed any light on this? What
am I going to do when I try to reinstall, weld it back on again???

Got any photos of what you have? The factory chrome muffler covers are welded onto the muffler casings from the factory. If someone put after market mufflers
on it, they may have had to weld the covers onto the new muffler casings, but I don't know why they would have had to. You don't have to remove the
mufflers to remove the rear wheel if you have a motorcycle jack. Just raise the bike as high as possible and unbolt the shocks. This will let the swing arm to
fall low enough to pull the axle out below the mufflers.
The right side muffler has been drilled apparently. I have heard some doing this to give it a slower beat effect like a HD has, but it only works on bikes with 2 separate exhausts. Stan

The only problem is with the right side. The shields from the header that overlap the exahust are welded together because there is no other bracket to the muffler to stabilize the rear shield. Posted one pic twice sorry. ![]() ![]()

On closer inspecting it appears that possibly the mufflers (not original) were welded into the original shields??I'd say you hit the nail on the head. These are not OEM mufflers but someone tried to make them look original. "We want to be free... Free to ride our machines without being hassled by the man!" |

The pics say it all. Someone was definitely trying to be creative here. It also looks like they were trying to make their own baffles for them. Maybe some one
here can offer you a set of factory or after market mufflers to put it back to normal.

Exactly what I thought. I put it all back together today and I dont know if the broken weld will be a problem or not, time will tell. Took it for a test run it
did'nt fall off so I'm going to let them go for now and yes be looking for replacements for the future. They are wicked boogered up with the tack welds
and lots of scratched chrome. Lucky they are below the bags so you can't see most of the ugly. Gas mileage was good I thought coming back from Tennesse. I
hammered it 9.5 hours back to MO and got about 34 mph. Question do the V&H pipes hook
up well on the T? Don't want to get into any welding. I like the sound of the pipes right now but could be a tad quieter. If I plug a couple of those
holes, would that make any difference or not?? And next time I am going to ask you guys questions before I tear into something, or is it tear something up?
Thanks for the input... Will be posting some pics in the near future.

There is no welding needed with the V&H exhaust. The only issue I know of is a fitment problem if you have Cobra floorboards but there are several options
to get around that.

That is quite the hack job.
It never ceases to amaze me what some folks will do to make a motorcycle loud.

Or slash cut Jardines. The PO just wanted to keep the nice look of the stock heat shields and had a welder too close at hand. I didn't know about the trick
of only drilling one side to get the "potato potato" sound of a Harley. It certainly won't work on a two-in-to-one-in-to-two exhaust like that on
a T. If you want loud - buy V&H. If you want quiet - buy stock take offs. I like the drilled stock sound. Good luck!
