I was out riding the other day and noticed a burnt plastic smell. When I got home I took off the seat and found the famous connector plug with the 3 yellow wires all burt to hell!! I cut it off and splced the wires back together with 3 seperate tube connectors. Haven't rode too much since then, but all seems OK so far. Still getting 13.4 volts on battery when idling. Anyone figure out yet what causes some of us to have this problem???

I just went thru the same thing. Stator checked fine, output to the battery is good. I cut out and replaced the connections with insulated spade connectors
with a bit of connector grease and all has been good for the last few weeks. All I can figure is that as the stock connections oxidize it increases the
resistance until the plug overheats and melts down.

I thought all was well with me untill I checked the charge on the battery. At idle it was around 13.4 volts, but dropped to around 12.7 when given a little
throttle! She's going to the "doctor" on Friday. Something a little more serious is goin on beyond my abilities! Like someone on another post
said, "trouble's a brewin"

Just in case anyone is interested, I got my bike back from the shop last week.The voltage regulator was not working properly.The mechanic said it could have
been the regulator that caused the plug to overheat or the burnt plug could have taken out the regulator.Either way,I got a new voltage regulator and all seems
to be fine now. Cost was $325.oo (Canadian),for parts and labour.

I just replaced my stator and regulator and I'm getting the same voltage. Fred says that he sees the same voltage drop. How many miles are on your bike? If
it's more than 30,000 (48,000 kilometers) you're pretty much due for a new stator.

New stator after 30k? How do you know it is going bad? I have almost 40k and at times it turns over slower than other times, but it has always started.

I had battery / charging problems today. I rode about 60 miles then everything went dead. I recharged the bettery then drove it home. After seaching the
electrical threads here, I checked the "Yellow Peril" (the dreaded plug with the yellow wires under the seat) and sure enough, it was toasted.
I'm going to replace the plug with soldered spade connectors and take it from there. I do not have any electrical diagnostic meters or tools. I thought I
would get everything connected back up and let the stealer run some tests. Just ready to turn 30K miles but I am hoping to make it to the end of the season
before installing a new stator and regulator.
How hard is it to use a meter and how much does it cost to buy one for this "shade tree" mechanic? Any comments or suggestions? Mike

Harbor Freight (or eBay for thatr matter) will sell you a Volt-Ohm Meter for about $10.

Yes, you can get a VOM for little money at Harbor Freight, but if your tool-buying philosophy is "buy quality, buy once", then you'll want to get
something nicer. Fluke meters are pro-quality but Craftsman has some very decent meters for reasonable money.
Using the meter is not difficult at all. Basically there are two probes, one for pos one for neg. If the reading goes below zero, reverse the probes. Just remember that with most meters you should never try to measure current. Most basic meters can only measure up to milliamps.

I definitely would not buy one from harbor freight. Get one from Radio Shack. Spend a little more money but you will definitely knotice a difference.
