The T has 65,000 and is good shape. It only happened a few times and only after riding a lot on very hot days. Could the contacts or brushes have a bad spot? Has anyone else had starter problem?

Starter? |

Not sure what's happening. On a couple 90+ days after riding hard and stopping for fuel my baby didn't turn over on the first push of the button. It sounded like it wanted to move but took 2 - 3 pushes of the button for the the engine to start turning over. More like pre-ignition or both valves stuck shut than a starter problem.

Alan,
Not sure if this will help or not. When I'm riding (or driving) in very hot weather, and I've been pushing it; I let the engine idle for a minute or two before shutting down. I don't have any scientific reasons but believe that the engine core will still be hot when I stop driving and quickly shutting down the circulation of coolant will prevent the engine core from dissipating the built up heat. By idling for a couple of minutes, the engine and coolant pumps are still running and gently lower the engine core temps before I shut down. Then again, I could be wrong. ![]() Andy |

Sounds like it may be vapor locking to me. But, at 65k miles it could also be the starter about to play out.

A little late, but maybe it will help someone else. I have had this happen on other bikes when the starter is worn out. Removing and cleaning the starter
(spray brushes, etc with electric cleaner) will provide a temporary fix. Rebuilding or replacing starter is a permanent fix. But my favorite fix is to get a
stronger battery! I put a military grade super maintenance free battery in my goldwing which was having starter issues (all the time) and have not had an
issue since (2 years)! When batteries get hot, they don't put out the same power and the starter will lag.
Another possible issue is coolant in the cylinder. A gasket leak can lead to coolant leaking into the cylinder which will vaporize when hot. The vapor causes pressure that makes it hard to turn over the engine. If you smell the sweet scent of coolant or have a little white smoke coming out, this is something to consider. |

Really didn't fix anything but the problem never came back, and she's got over 80,000 now.
