I'm back. still got the jitters from the Morphine and rapid weight loss, but for the most part I am back. They were able to do it fully lapraroscopically
meaning that only small tools entered my abdomen. I had 1 -3" incision through my navel (needed to pull my colon up through)and 3 - 1"or smaller
incisions surrounding the navel for the lap tools. The greatest news is that there was no evidence of cancer. They removed about 18 inches of my colon from the
appendix and up and it is still being double checked for cancer, but prognosis is good that it it be still come back as benign. I should be back at work in 2-3
weeks max.
I was a little reluctant to go into too much detail related to my illness, but then by doing so, I hope that my discussing this on an open forum might help someone else make a more informed decision should the need occur for them. I might could have avoided surgery altogether had I heeded my personal physicians advice 9 months ago and had the colonoscopy performed at the start of the year. The polyp would have been small enough to have been removed in the doctors office , then. My advise to to have a colonoscopy test done as soon as you turn 50. Sooner if already having symptoms. Stan

Good to hear from you Stan.
Glad it worked out well. My doc talked to your doc two weeks ago at a conference and they discussed your case. Isn't it fuuny how people's lives cross paths?!! Thanks for the caution warning. I am a great believer in Colonoscpies. My grandfather, one of his brothers, and two of his dauther's died from colon cancer. My father had 18" of his colon removed in 2000. His was caught early enough, but had he had the colonoscopy earlier, he could have forgone a very difficult surgery. One from which he never really recovered. If you are 50 years old and don't have colon cancer in your family history, you should have a colonoscopy every 5 years. If you have colon cancer in your family history, you should start having them at 40 and have one every 3 years. Colonoscpies are nothing these days. Simple and easy. The worst part is the "prep". Colon cancer is very hereditary. And, it is a very, very ugly and painful way to die. I will now step down from my soap box. You take care of yourself, Stan. -Dan |

Great to see you back Stan! Thanks for speaking honestly about your procedure. If you can convince just one person to get checked, it will be worth it. Bob

Welcome back Stan. I was relieved to read that all is well and that your recovery is only going to be a few weeks. Your words of encouragement for others to
get a colonoscopy is probably the best advice given out this year on this forum. I've had two and the reassurance that all is well is terrific. I must
agree with Dan that the "prep" is a son-of-a-gun. But my prep the second time around seemed better than the first time. It is certainly nothing for
anyone to be concerned about. And the procedure itself is a snap.
I remember at moments like this an ole friend of ours here on the forum use to tell us to take it easy. He would admonish us for trying to feel recovered too soon. He would say take is easy and take it slow. So if you don't mind I'll echo his sentiments one more time for him. I think he'd like that. Now that you're laid up for a couple of weeks to recover, you'll be able to fantasize about some new motorcycle trips for 2008. Get well soon ole friend and take care of yourself. alepel |

That's great news, Stan. Sure glad to hear that it is benign.
Don't get in too big a hurry to be healed. You don't need anything to upset the apple cart now that you're on the road to recovery. Keep us posted. Putz |

Stan glad to hear everything went well and sorry I am just now replying, but made the mistake of going back to work after retiring from the Air Force. They
were working me 6 days a week so not a lot of time to do much of anything else. That's been fixed though they did away with my position so now I am free
again to enjoy life. I have an appointment to see my doc next month and he has been trying to get me to have a colonoscopy. I just turned 50 this year and have
been putting it off, but you have motivated me to get it done, so by posting here you may very well save me the problems you are going through. Thanks and hope
you have a speedy recovery.

Stan,
Are you 100% yet? My wife is sitting up, working on the computer about 2-1/2 hours a day now. She has to recline every time her stomach muscles tighten up.
