Yuma AZ time warp |
Lead | ||
|
Well, here I am in wonderful Yuma AZ. I have been shoveling sunshine for a weeks now.............. the stuff won't stop coming down. But this place has a
certain time warped......... thing........ going on. Ape hangers!!! That's right...... handlebars way higher than a persons shoulders. It seems everywhere
I go there are middle aged paunchy guys riding Harleys with ape hangers. Great big fat ol' geezer glides.......... black, greasy rat bikes............
nipponese cruisers........ with hiiigh handlebars. WTF??? Slow pokin through corners....... wobbling around the mall parking lots......... pulling away from
green lights going first to the right, than to the left......... yow. Back in '65 I put em on my blue XLCH. Blue cause all the red ones sold real fast.
They really looked cool back then. Until I realized I couldn't steer the bike and the wind made me feel like a 4X8 sheet of 1/4 in plywood. But, hey, for
the toy ride once a year what could it hurt? Cold wind blowing tonight........ would someone from "up north" please shut the door?
Never ask a biker why they ride cause you won't understand the answer.

Alan....from your description I understand your title about the "time warp". On another note I'd like to ask you a question as a future retiree. From all that I have read about Yuma and how hot it gets there, why did you and your wife pick this place as your winter home? What attracted you to this part of the country? I believe it was you in an earlier posting, talking about getting a trailer to take your T with you to Yuma. Did you ever get the trailer and do you have your T with you now?

Why did we pick Yuma? We only live here for the winter. Our main home is on Vancouver Island in BC Canada where we spend 7 months in spring thru fall. I lived
most of my adult life in Corpus Christi,Tx and only moved to Canada in 2000. Yuma reminds me a lot of CC about 25 years ago. CC winter weather is nicer than
Yuma though. Nights here are quite cold........ low 40's........ and days in the 60's 70's. We're spending Christmas in CC and it will be my
first time back there since 2000. CC may still be a better winter choice. Yuma is only 4 hrs to Phoenix or San Diego. There is also a Marine Corps Air Station
here.
I didn't trailer the T cause of the expense......... about $600 actual trailer expense. BC cycle insurance is VERY expensive for a full year. BC and Canada in general allow almost no competition in many consumer areas. Insurance is one....... cable, phone, electric rates, gas pricing are others. I was going to buy a bike when I got here and looked at a few, but it's really too cold here in the winter to really enjoy riding. For me anyway....... by 6PM I would need a jacket and gloves....... most days too. Although the sun is bright the north wind blowing right down from Canada is cooooold. We also left late this year........ late November and from east of Seattle to Idaho it poured rain and then we were barely 12 hours ahead of snow all through Nevada in the upper elevations of route 93 and 95. Pulling a trailer in a minivan with chains through one of the most desolate high desert areas of the US is no fun. I do have my pedal bike and I'm going out for a ride now....... Yuma is neat for that. Imagine......... ape hangers with leather streamers......looong streamers. Smack.....slap. Oh and no helmet law in AZ........... 41F and just a bandanna. Liberal gun laws. Saw a couple on a Road King........ he with brown leather jacket and shoulder holster with looked like a Ruger heavy caliber......... her with a semi-auto on her hip. Totally cool. Gotta go. bye4now. |

alan.....the picture you painted of Yuma is not quite what I imaged. At least not the cold part. I can understand why you like to live there but you never
explained how you came to select Yuma especially when you spoke so highly of Corpus Christi. Why did you not select CC?
One other note in your posting was the reference to the Marine Corps Air Base at San Diego. Were you in the service? My wife and I were suppose to go to the Marine Corps Air Base this past October for the Air Show. Work forced me to stay home but my wife went with her sons and she loved it. From what I saw of the brochures of the event I want to go more now than ever. You painted a very descriptive picture of you riding on your pedal bike with a bandanna and ape hangers and very looooong leather streamers. I'll bet you get a lot of attention as you go by. The idea of motorcyclists riding by armed like you described, sure doesn't paint a very good picture for the motorcycling image. I suppose if you lived in the region it might not surprise the locals, but it still is scary. Well enjoy some of that sunshine for me, the next time your laying out in the sun. I'll be sure to be thinking of you the next time I'm shovelling snow.

I guess my writing isn't so clear. It's not my pedal bike with ape hangers......... it's the local Harley riders. The MCAS is in Yuma.... about a
mile from our back door. I was in US Navy aviation. We picked Yuma cause we have family in this trailer park and the living is relatively inexpensive. Yuma is
much like CC 25 years ago....... before it got too big for its britches and built up. As for armed citizens I get a feeling of safety knowing there are many
responsible armed citizens around me. Some nut pulls a gun in a mall and is taken down by an armed citizen before it's a massacre. It's like a fire
extinguisher........ i'm not expecting a fire to break out, and it's pretty unlikely, but I'm ready if it does.
