Jetting Carbs? |
Lead | ||
|
Hey guys I am finally having time to post up my questions about my Tourer. I have the V&H on my bike and haven't rejetted. I am afraid that rejetting
the bike will only ruin my mpg. I really don't want to loose my milelage so I am wondering what effect does the rejetting do to the fuel mileage. Also, if
you can list your exhaust and carb set up...either jetted or non with your mileage so I can compare. Right now I am getting 35 mpg. Thanks alot and hope to
hear alot of ideas and stats.

All stock except for K&N air filter. 40mpg.
A proper jetting shouldn't kill you gas mileage. It could actually improve it. By proper I mean with dyno and exhaust gas analyzer.

It sounds like somebody already killed your gas mileage, with gutted mufflers mine was getting 40+ mpg. I just put stocks on and haven't had a chance to to check the mileage yet but when I had the carbs readjusted they told me that they were out of sync and about one turn off. I figure my mileage will improve. When they adjust them they have to do it with sensor probe in both mufflers or it won't be right. Ted

Mthiele,
I don't know if rejetting has an impact on the gas mileage. I know mine went down after installing a jet kit and V&H, but that was because I was 'blipping' the gas more often.

You and I are in the same boat. V&H, K&N, no rejet, 35 MPG. Check your spark plugs. I bet they're perfectly cocoa brown just like mine. If so, you don't have to rejet. If you're running lean, they'll look bone white and you'll see a lot of wear on the contacts.

Well if mine are dark like yours...what are you doing about it. Tuning or what?

Mine were dark BEFORE I installed V&H, perfect afterwards. If you're running rich WITH V&H, then the previous owner rejetted too rich and
you'll have to address that. Enough speculation, though. Go yank them suckers out!

Alright I checked my spark plugs and they didn't have black on them or weren't too white. I assume that that is good. How can I get up higher then 36
mpg?

V-twins and carbs don't lend themselves to 'good' gas mileage. I think 36-38 mpg is the expected average. The best way to improve your MPG's:
- cut wind resistance - slow down to 55-60 mph - properly inflated tires |

Hey, thanks for the advice. I am guessing since I can't get anyone to swap their stock windshield for my memphis fats, I am getting ready to cut it down
and get some lowers mounts and make me some larger longer lowers to cut the wind.

I tried to knock 5-10 MPH off each shift point, but the engine didn't seem to like being lugged like that, so I just live with a happy T and 35 MPG.
