Hello gentlemen, my main question at this point is it at all possible to retro fit a tank from another model of Shadow or VTXto the tourer? I am looking at
this mainly because I much prefer the speedo on the tank opposed to it's current location. And does any one have info for an after market tank with greater
capacity? Just trying to get a game plan together for my return from Iraq in 5 weeks. Thanks again for any help.

David.....I can't really help you with your questions, but I do want to offer you a personal opinion. I too, really like the look of a speedometer on the
gas tank. But I wear a full face modular helmet and if my speedometer was on the gas tank I would have one heck of a time looking down enough to sufficiently
see the speedometer. And if I'm riding along at 60 - 65 mph it is just too much distraction to look down to see the speedometer. I just don't want to
move my eyes that far off the road. I suppose if I was wearing anything but a full face helmet it wouldn't be a problem. But that's not going to happen
because I like the protection that I get from the full face helmet.
I'll be watching this thread with interest to see what some others have to say.

Alepel - ditto on trying to see the speedo on the tank. When I was looking at bikes, that was actually one of my criteria.... I wanted the speedo on the
tank. After riding a few, it became obvious that you had to make a conscious efffort to look down, even without a helmet. The T's bar mounted speedo
really is a practical choice from a riding perspective, but yeah... I still do love the look of it on the tank !

Ditto on what MarMan and Al said. I've had 2 bikes (Honda 750 Ace, "86 VT1100C, and Suzuki Volusia) that had the speedo and other gauges on the tank.
I now prefer them out front.

Well thanks for the helpful insight guys, I'll scratch that one off the to do list. Can the stock speedo be elevated from it's position? Do risers make
it hard to see?

With the HD Deuse risers that I installed, the speedo is actually easier to see. As for moving the speedo up..... you can put anywhere you like as long as the
cable and wiring will reach. I've seen where one feller mounted his in a special plate that bolts to the handlebars in between the riser caps. Don't
know where he got it, or if it was custom made.

Cobra use to make the speedo holder shown here. I think this may be what Stan is thinking of. I just checked the Cobra site and it seems they stopped making it too. I've always had it so i can't comment as to how much of an improvement it is vs. stock.

That is about what I believe a true touring bike should be able to do. The new Rocket III Touring with only 4.9gals and 35mpg is also limited (oddly the RIII
Classic has a 6.3gal tank!). I won't even mention the VTX Tourers.

I've got potential aux. tank that I'm watching on ebay. Just something that I wanted to try and do but never could find the right candidate to begin
the project with. I have plans to add it to my trailer tongue if it works out as planned. If I win it and it pans out, then I'll post the fabrication
procedures here on the site for all to see.

I've thought myself Alain... the tank on the T does seems big, but it sure doesn't hold a lot for a "Tourer". Must be an inner
"liner" and a lot of air space between the walls.

If you look at the shape of the tank from the bottom, you will see it has a large volume carved out to fit over the spine of the bike frame. This is where
all the capacity is lost to. Heck, you can see the hump just by looking into the tank from the fill opening.

As Duke says the reason the T's tank looks wide yet holds so little is because it straddles the T's double top bar frame. On the other hand my
Nighthawk's tank looks narrower yet holds more (4.8 gallons vs. the T's 4.2 gallons) because it straddles the NH's single frame top tube. Thus on
the NH there is less room between the inner walls of the tank and more space for gasoline.
With 4.8 gallons at 50 mpg my NH get well over 200 miles before I have to fill up. It makes a big difference on a road trip. When travelling every time I stop with the T I fill up. With the NH sometimes I stop just to take a break and do not need to fill up. I would also like to have a cruiser with a 200+ mile range.

This is what I had in mind to use as an aux. fuel tank. Holds about 2 gallon and will fit on a luggage rack or rear seat with some modifications. This has
already been set up for this purpose, but I'm gonna pass on it and wait for one in better condition and with the valving on the end instead of the sides.

Argh - The 2 gallon pony keg on ebay is already gone - I guess that is good cuz I did not have much of a chance to consider purchasing. I do like the black
one in the photo with the Magna.... gives he appearance of a piece of luggage.
I want to bring gas on my long trip this spring, but cannot bring myself to strap on a plastic red gas can.... Right now I have a one pint gas cylinder (originally for holding white gas for a camp stove) - this will help me in a pinch but really does not give me much range for those long desolate stretches.... |
