Not charging |
Lead | ||

Well it looks like the T curse got me, I've had trouble lately keeping the battery charged so today before I went for a ride I checked the stator output
and I was getting nothing. so it looks like I'm going to have to remove the seat and do a full chrging stystem check to see what's wrong. Lets hope its
something simple. Any suggestions will be a help.
Thanks in advance. Ted |

Ted,
Sorry to hear about your charging woes. Definitely follow one of the troubleshooting guides. There's one in the Honda Manual and there are many on the Internet including those that can be accessed at http://www.sjhr.org/articles/repair01.htm and/or http://www.electrosport.com/Images/fault_finding.pdf . You will notice that all of them start with the battery. Have you tried to charge your battery externally, i.e. with a battery charger? Does it hold a charge? If your battery is fine, if it holds a charge, then by all means do take the seat off. First just look at the stator-voltage regulator connector. If its plastic cover is partially black and if the connector itself is partially black regardless of what tests you perform I would venture to say you will most likely be replacing both the stator and voltage regulator, but do not take my word for it, do all the tests. A simple to test to tell if one part is bad and the other is not, is to feel the wires on both sides of the connector when the engine is running. If one side is hot and the other is not, the bad part is on the side of the connector. On the other hand, as Jeff/Toadrider advises, replace both those parts at the same time. Otherwise, you may end-up replacing a second whichever not long after, as I did when I first replaced the voltage regulator, then later the stator and not long after a second voltage regulator. In other words, don't let one bad part cause the other part to go bad. Good luck with your troubleshooting. If you have questions at any step, just ask.

Fred,
Have you changed your stator youself or did you have a repair shop do it. I just came from my shop and he told me the stator is wet, I thought it was dry. Do you know which is correct without taking it apart to find out. After all the checks I've done so far it doesn't seem like the stator is bad. I still have a couple more to do before I'm sure. I have to check the output of the stator and then do a detailed check of the regulator. Ted |

Ted,
I changed out the stator myself. It is wet, but oil will not gush out when you open the side cover. You should change the gaskets. The part numbers are Stator----31120-MAH-005 Starter cover gasket---11365-MM8-881 Left cover gasket-------11395-MAH-000 The following link will take you to a thread that probably can answer every question you have. http://hondashadowacetourer.yuku.com/reply/24233/t/Re-Charging-question.html#reply-24233

Fred,
Thanks for the info, I did the rest of the checks and found out it is the stator, I'm only getting 12 or lower AC volts across the three yellow stator wires at high idle. I'm going to change the regulator at the same time to be on the safe side. Ted |

Charging system | #6 | ||
|
Well, I took the bike in and had a new stator and regulator installed. I now have an electrosport charging system and the mechanic siad I should have no more
problems. It's funny but the stator for the T also is the one for theYamaha Adventurer. The Japanese know how to fit one part on different bikes so they
don't have to start from scratch like they do here.
