alain, this is the "in" thing around these parts. even have a show completely dedicated to this type rod. it's called the "GREASERAMA" and it brings out a huge crowd. they also have a bigger show of these over in illinois called "the HUNNERD CAR PILEUP" they won't let anything in with shiney paint or chrome and billet. i went over once in my '57 ford and had to park outside the gates. most "beaters" around here do have primer and maybe even a finished interior or even a nice clean finished, shiney engine compartment, but they are the types of rod that will be finished someday...these are DONE! these guys go to great lengths to make these cars look "primal" as you said. go into junk yards looking for a body like this. thing is though, they are mostly built very safe and dependable. bill's truck will cruise at 70-80 very smoothly.
as far as the air bags, he made all his bracketry for them and did a dynamite job of it. this isn't something that's done on most, but worked very nicely for this one.
guy across the line in kansas builds these using toyota pickup frames, suspension, and running gear, then goes looking for the most rusty body he can find in 30's model cars and pickups, then ads all kinds of neat stuff to it. you could stand and look at it for hours and still probably miss something he's done. one guy has a dog cage in the back of a pickup sort of like bill's and actually carries around a coon hound in it. to me, these are a welcome change to the chromed, billet, cookie cutters out there. not everybodies "cup 'o tea", but i love 'em. problem is, they've become so popular, that good one are going for $8-10,000.
