Posts: 935 03/31/08 8:47 AM	Tags : None been on the local news four times now since i've been up. missouri one of the top ten for motorcycle deaths. the news people make a big deal out of the number of deaths involving riders not wearing helmets (20%...so that still means 80% were killed while wearing helmets), but no where in the article do they mention if the rider was at fault, or the percentage of cagers who hit a motorcyclist while they weren't paying attention. missouri does have a helmet law, kansas doesn't, so i believe the news people are even mixing this up. i never see a motorcyclist in missouri without a helmet. they are trying to appeal the helmet law here, so that's probably why all this is coming about. proponents of the bill site that other sports(horseback riding, skiing, any water craft sports, etc.)don't have a helmet requirement. like with seat belts, i'd just like for it to be my personal choice. bud

Posts: 1905 03/31/08 11:14 AM	Bud, Unfortunately, the conservative leadership finds it necessary to legislate safety devices, you know, for our own good. I guess we're too stupid to make rational, intelligent decisions on our own. In Ohio, a helmet is optional but I choose to wear one. On the other hand, seat belts are mandatory and honestly, the only reason I wear them... my car is too annoying to drive with the seat belts disengaged. The part of the seat belt legislation that irks me the most... Had Ohio not passed a mandatory seat belt use law, the federal government would withhold disbursement of the taxes we paid. Andy

HSATF Member Posts: 25 04/01/08 10:21 PM	I don't mind you wearing a helmet or not wearing a helmet. If you get in a wreck (your fault, cager's fault, the moon's fault) and you're brain dead or on life-long disability and I have to pay extra medical insurance to cover you, then I mind. A lot of people want the government to stay off their backs and let them be free. Many of these same people want the government or somebody else to step in and take the blame and bail them out if things go wrong. Here in Sacramento, CA, people want to build their houses in a flood plain. Then they want to sue when it floods. Some of these same kinds of people ride motorcycles. David

HSATF 1st Officer Posts: 1927 04/02/08 6:45 AM	I don't like the "man" telling me what to do any more than anybody else. But, I don't like paying for stuff that I'm not responsible for either. I think there should be some rules and regulations for helmets. And, maybe even the same rules/laws for seatbelts. I think that some states have the right idea. Texas being one of them. (I am bias!!). Minors (under 18 years old) have to wear a helmet. If you are old 18 years, old and have adequate medical insurance, you do not have to wear a helmet. I think that is fair. I never owned a helmet when I was younger. I never ride without one now. My choice. -Dan Don't worry about the horse being blind, Just load up the wagon.

HSATF Tail Gunner Posts: 72 04/10/08 9:04 PM	The last week, the first REALLY warm weather here in Cent. IL, there were several wrecks with serious injuries. All the injuries were people without helmets. One was what was probably a crotch rocket showing off and driving way too fast on the interstate, probably trying to imitate the insane riding on the web in Europe, and the guy bounced off two cars before finally wrecking. Anther guy had single accident ran off road. Couple without helmets hit a vehicle that turned left in front of them, said the rider left 60 feet of locked up tire tread. Both have serious head injuries. Saw lots of new riders tippy toeing around corners and making me nervous (OK I remember when I got on again after a long break last year, but I stayed out of real traffic till I was a LOT more secure than most I saw last weekend). Anyway, be careful out there. Oh, the wife went with me for a nice hour long ride on her Shadow...in the country...first real ride for her since passing (only woman in class of 12, ranked 3rd in class!) her MSF license class and getting her "M" back on her license. Really nice to have her with me on a ride again.

HSATF Tail Gunner Posts: 72 04/24/08 5:50 PM	I was road captain for our STAR touring group of 15 bikes last weekend on a 300 mile (round trip) ride! Jan was on my right all day and was a trooper. Best thing was when we got home, she was tired (so was I) but we both had that silly grin I think all of you are familiar with. I was afraid she would be tired and NOT happy, but that grin told me she will be a rider again for sure. Then yesterday, she suggested we ride bikes to the next town for lunch. BEautiful day and beautiful ride. So nice to have my wife riding with me again. Thanks for the kind words, I will pass them along.
