My friend, Denise, and I are looking to camp close to the BRP a few times this year so we can do extended periods of Fairy Stone hunting. I've found a
number of private campgrounds near Fairy Stone State Park...but have a question about the State Parks. Most of them say "one vehicle per tent site".
Since we'll both have gear on our bikes, I'm hoping that they will allow two bikes at a site (or 3 if John decides to camp).
Have any of you had an issue with bikes in a campground? I know that some private camps don't even want bikes going in and out (our friends with two Nomads
have to park their bikes in the general parking area away from their RV at the camp they stayed all winter in FL).
I have got the camping ITCH somethin' fierce and can't wait to head for the hills!

They list bike-friendly and bike-only campgrounds. 3-4 are in NC. |

With that link I get the dreaded "ERROR: The page you requested could not be found on the CycleFish website!" You can click on the Hit The Road
button at the top of the page and choose Motorcycle Camping from the drop down menu.

Thanks, Winger and Skip! I'll be checking some of those out, too, and see what their noise and "lights out" rules are. The only issue I have with
SOME (not all) of the "bike only" camps, it that some can get a bit wild or noisy with over-enthusiastic consumption of spirits, or show-offs doing
burnouts on their bikes. I'm sure I'll get enough of THAT noise when we camp in the big field at the Smokeout in June! *sigh*
I'm more of a "back to nature" gal who enjoys hearing the chirping of the birds, and the rustle of the wind in the trees.

Thanks, Scott, that is an interesting site.
It has a lot of RV "boondocking" sites (unofficial camping in Wal-Mart parking lots), but by looking around, I did find a couple of official campgrounds in VA for tenting, and some of the listing comments were made by motorcyclists. Live It, Love It, Paint It, Ride It!

Well I'll be, this makes sense now. I just returned from a trip that included a jaunt up the BRP.
At Marburys Mill (?) they were selling litle stone 'crosses' - I asked the woman and indeed these were the Fairy Stones ! I then looked at a map and saw that I was very near Fairy Stone State Park. Unfortunately, I did not make the minor detour to check it out. That night, I camped on the BRP at Peaks of Otter. Great campground, but unfortunately those on the BRP do not have showers. I stayed at State Parks for 5 nights on that trip. The State Park campgrounds are wonderful ! Clean, relatively quiet, hot showers and never once did I get any grief about my noisy bike (though I did feel a little self concious at times.) Cool thing about many of the State Parks out east is that they often have 'lean to's' - a three sided structure on a raised platform on which you pitch your tent - most times there is enough of an overhang under which you can park the bike, next to the picnic table. Anyways - very cool way to make camping more enjoyable in the event of rain. I am probably not telling anyone anything they do not already know - it was all new to me ! Oh, and the private campgrounds ? They kind of turned me off as I see them as a sea of RV's parked close together in an open field. Fine if you have an RV, but for me and my little tent, I found the State Parks to be the way to go - |
