At this time, I don't think I'll be riding in the WV rally. If someone else can take the lead, I'll be more than happy to point, assist or help
out in the planning.
My wing has sold, so if I should ride a bike that weekend, it will be my Magna. If I don't ride, Holly and I will plan a Miata trip to the area on Friday-Saturday, hoping to sit with the clan for Friday dinner. Andy |

Thanks for the roll call Alain. Wouldn't it be something to see 50 or 60 names on the list by September.

Skip....you're welcome. 50 to 60 attendees and we'd need a police escort to go anywhere.
Rich....your name is added. Looking forward to meeting you.

Well, I've never ridden interstate, but if I can get the time off and a green light from the family, and if the more experienced riders here in MI will let
me ride with them, it's at least a possibility for me.

Glenn,
As long as you have the time, there are some 'back roads' in Ohio that will keep you off the freeway. Come down out of MI and pickup US20. Head east to Norwalk then pickup US250 (not sure if it's South or East). Follow US250 all the way to Wheeling WV. A small section shares I77, but it's not too crazy in that part of the state (not like the freeways in Detroit or Cleveland). Stay on US250 from Wheeling to Fairmont WV. This section of road is as good as the Dragon. You'll go through a few curves at 10 mph or you'll drag the pegs. Once you hit Fairmont WV, you can cut back to US19 to Clarksburg, or take I79. I rode on both. US19 would be a whole lot of fun, but at 400 miles into the day, you may not want to take on the challenge. I79 between Fairmont and Clarksburg is pretty mild. I80 (OH turnpike) is not too bad from Toledo to the I-480 exit. When I visited my kids at Bowling Green, I would take US20. It only took 20 minutes longer. Unless you are comfortable with 20,000 mindless morons, driving at 80 mph, talking on cellphones and cutting cars off... I would avoid I480 between the I-80 (western) and I-271 (eastern) exits. I-77/SR8 is pretty crazy from the I-271 exit until you get south of US224. Andy |

Hey Andy....I did a search of google maps and I find that I am looking at a 400 mile trip from Rochester to Clarksburg over interstates. An estimate of 6 hours
driving time on interstate. I can't and won't do the interstate route if that is all that is available to me.
Do you have any suggestions for me as far as routes from NY?

Al,
First, I doubt any freeway is like I-90 between Buffalo and Syracuse. That stretch of road is scarey in a cage. I'd take US 20 to Seneca lake, then down the lake to NY 54. NY54 will end at I86 in Bath. I86 in western NY is a nice freeway, very little traffic, big rolling hills and a lot of cows. I rode this after my last Americade rally. Have not riden US 219 or US119 in mid-PA, but I think I know what you can expect. Should be like US 20 with a few hills. When you get to US 50 in WV, hang a right. I've ridden on US 50 before. I rode the southern part of
US119 in KY & WV last year. A lot of switchbacks and at one point I thought I was on top of Mt. McKinley.
An alternative is to take US 6 west to Warren PA, then pick up US62 south. It runs along the Allegheny river... very pretty ride, not too technical. The only problem is getting from Franklin PA to Clarksburg WV without going through Pittsburg. PA 60 west of Pitts is pretty decent and when you get south of Pitts on I79, the freeway is not too bad. Alain,
As regards figuring out how long it will take you to get to a destination, I usually figure 60 mph for Interstate driving as an overall average including stops of 15-20 minutes every time I stop for fuel fill-ups. On secondary roads including US Highways, State Road and County Roads, I usually average close to 42 mph when taking the same 15-20 minutes of break time every time I fill the gas tank. Thus, it takes me over 40% longer to reach a destination on secondary roads compared to riding on the Interstates, which is just fine with me, but I wanted to warn you that 400 miles of backroads may take you 9 to 11 hours depending on how long the breaks you take are.
