This is Walker Pass Campground, a free BLM campground. It is pretty, but bring you own toilet paper. The men's outhouse was awful. You get to Walker Pass by heading east on 178 out of Bakersfield. As a way to prepare for this summer's ride, I took the kitchen sink.
This is another shot. It is really pretty. What you can't see are all the small wildflowers growing everywhere. I was going to stay at the Lake Isabella KOA, but the wind was blowing really hard. It was peaceful here and the sunset was very nice.
This is the old scoot unloaded.
Home for 2 nights. A cheap tent works just fine for short trips. I don't know if I'll get something better for the summer when I travel to the east coast.
This is Badwater in Death Valley. It is 200+ feet below sea level. I really like traveling through Death Valley. I got out before the temps hit 100. I took the road south and went to Shoshone. From there I headed up 127 to Highway 95 in Nevada.
I picked up a sandwich in Beatty. This area is known for the birds which fly north and south through this part of Nevada. A wide spot in the road seemed like a great place to eat. Again, the picture doesn't show the wildflowers blooming all over the place. After eating lunch, I heard a bush crying, "Save me, I'm dying of thirst." So I watered it.
Turning west on Highway 95/6 from Tonopah, there is a rest stop with a camping area. Home for another night. One of those people attracted to motorcycles came over to visit. He laid oil and gas pipe throughout Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana a long time ago. Talking with this gentleman was one of the high points of the trip. I'm not much for talking, but I can listen really well, keeping the whole thing going by asking questions. What do you want, somebody who will talk to you or somebody who will listen to you?
This is Highway 6 looking west at the Sierras. Highway 395 came up in a few miles. I wanted to cross into Yosemite, but the pass was closed by snow. The next pass north was also closed, so I just headed up 395 into Reno and then home on Interstate 80.
