Of course we always get a huge list in the spring and by September it is down a bit. that's cool. I'm thinking a 6 person cabin has 3 rooms/beds. A
number of us are traveling alone and will need our own bed. Even the 10 person (5 bed) cabin will be insufficient for a typical (of the last two years) turn
out. Those types of issues where why I was liming myself to the larger lodges.

Alepel,
I took two days to get to Marion last year, rather than taking the highway all in one day, it was a good choice. Hopefully I can find the extra vacation to do it again. Tony |

Tony,
About 15 years ago, my sister had her wedding at Blackwater Falls. There was a Best Western in Davis, but it looks like it's gone. The cabin idea sounds great, but I must say, I've had my fill of cabin camping. Any boy scout from the NE Ohio area will know about the Beaumont camp in Ashtabula. My idea of roughing it is stopping at a Hampton without reservations.
It may still be better off centering around Clarksburg, Fairmont or Morgantown. There will be more dining and room options. When we stayed in Davis, the only dining option was "Mom's", next door to the motel. You should have seen the look I got when I asked for a non-smoking section.

Blackwater falls only had the lodge dinning room; one of the reasons I didn't mention it the first time around. I don't mind either a nice modern
cabin like Brian found or a hotel.
I remember camp swampy well. I often forget the smoking non-smoking issue now that Ohio is all non-smoking. That is a good point. I don't think anyone wants to be responsible for picking a hotel

The cabins at Seneca Rocks sounds really nice. Cheap, a fireplace, AND a hot tub!
Sadly, Kathy and I may not be able to make this one. Mauston, WI to Clarksburg, WV was 755 miles. Seneca Rocks is 851. That doesn't include all of the time wasted trying to get through Chicago. If we can find a couple of worthwhile stops along the way there and back, maybe we can still go. I know we both want to visit the Creation Museum in Kentucky, Just south of Cincinatti. That might be one option. Maybe staying at my mom's house in Milwaukee would get us 150 miles closer, and a trip across Lake Michigan on the ferry would get us comfortably past Chicago... Just brainstorming out loud. We still both would like to go. Any other ideas for things to stop and do along the way would be appreciated. Towing the bike with my diesel pickup seems to be out of the question since it would cost about $500. (And that's if the price of diesel fuel doesn't go up.) Alain, for the time being, I think you should change our status from probable to doubtful.

Robb,
I know what you mean about Chicago traffic. We drove up last August,... a Saturday afternoon was like rush hour traffic in Cleveland. If you plan to ride, I would suggest picking up US6 near Sandusky and following the lake shore. Plenty of parks to rest in. When you get near Cleveland, I would suggest the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. I'm a charter member and have some free admission tickets which you can use. Every time I visit, I would spend 6-8 hours and still not see everything. I believe they kept a lot of the displays from the John Lennon special. I spent an hour looking at the video and listening to the music of Jimi Hendrix. If you like watersports, whitewater rafting in Ohiopyle (PA/MD border) offers some nice but tame rapids. A trip can take anywhere from two to six hours, depending upon the water level. Near Ohiopyle is a Frank Lloyd Wright house called Falling Water. Build over a small creek and in/around the nature of the area. In southern Ohio, there's the AMA Museum in Pickerington and a huge m/c store (Competition Accessories) near Columbus. Andy |

I've been working on my route to Clarksburg from Rochester. My goal was to stay away from the interstates near the metro areas like Buffalo, Erie, and
Pittsburgh. I think that I've accomplished that. My route, subject to change, would be something like this. NY 19 out of Rochester until I get to I86 which
is the old scenic route 17. I can travel this until I get to Allegany State Park where I pick up Pa 219. Now from here I can stay with 219 until I get to I68
which takes me to I79 and then Clarksburg. Or I take 219 into 119 and then into I79 to Clarksburg. Six of one and half a dozen the other.
Driving time appears to be 10+ hours and I figure that's two days or possibly one, but not likely one. The northern half of Pennsylvania I am somewhat familiar with but the lower half and West Virginia are all new and exciting to me. My only negative feelings is where I am going to find a gas station every 120 miles. Maybe this would be a good time to buy a GPS?

Al,
Don't sell yourself short on an accomplishment. When I was sick and left Americade 06, I left Albany at 7am in the morning. I was going to make it a two day trip but when I realized I was near Cory/Jamestown at 2pm in the afternoon, I knew I could be home by 6/7. Blue skies, open road,... I could ride for days. It's nice to have the open slab on the back end of the day. Finding gas should not be a problem. I start looking at 80 miles into the tank. Yea, I may make one more gas stop over 400 miles but I never have run out of gas. The closest I came was getting into Caldwell on fumes, but that was my own fault for leaving Marietta on empty.

Harmon Cabin's | #115 | ||

Alain,
Harmon cabins is another entity altogether. The ones I am referring to belong to Yocum Vacationland. I have stayed in 6 different cabins of theirs and all were good, some were great. The ones I am thinking of for the rally are new in the last 5 or 6 years and sleep 8 to 10. The rent now is $200.00 per night plus $10 each for anyone over four persons. So $220.00 is the max if we rent two for six people each. Couples like Terry and I would get hit the hardest and that would be $73.34 per day. That is $20 per night cheaper than Marion, VA. However we will likely have to forego the used paper plates and lack of a hot tub. I realize this may be a tough way to go for a rally such as ours. It was just a suggestion and I am fine with with whatever the group consensus is. Brian |

Andy.....of course I will keep it in mind that one day might be doable. I'm going to enjoy myself and just have a good time getting there. This of course
will be my longest road trip on the bike and a precursor to my first Iron Butt 428.736924 mile trip.
If I get close to Clarksburg and I can begin to smell Dawn's perfume I might just push it.

Al,
I use windows live local all the time to pre-plan gas stops in areas that I think it will be hard to find gas. just type in "gas station" as the business to search for and as you pan and zoom around the map the list of the closest filing stations will pop up. It also works if you like a certain brand, type in "shell" and it finds them. I have used it to plan lunch too, search "fast food" or "Italian" or what ever. I just zoom in to my route and pan a round a bit until i find what i want. I used this extensively to plan last years BRP trips. Tony |

I've been playing around with this site a bit and it does not display a lot of selections. Do you have to sign up for it to work better. I looked for a few "gas stations" and it found only a few around the Pittsburgh region which is one place I am going to avoid. But out in the boonies it does not give me any gas stations unless I try typing in Mobil, Hess, etc. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but I did happen to notice it says sign in and that sometimes indicates that usage might be limited.

alepel,
I don't believe you need to sign in. zoom in close it fitters by zoom level. It only shows 10 items at any one time. so if i look at pittsburg at the 20mile level i see 10 stations, if i zoom to 1mile or less still 10 stations but it is a good chance that that is all of them. Tony |
