My Starting Problems... |
Lead | ||
|
Bummer...cannot start my bike. Bike was turning hard and then started to not turn but 'click' or 'buzz'. I ended up taking out the starter and
cleaned it and tested it and it tested fine. Put it back in the bike and before I put the starter gears back in I thought I would try it to be sure it still
functioned properly and it turned fine. After putting all gears back and buttoning up and refilling coolant I thought I would be good to go but when I went to
fire it up all I got was the buzzing/clicking. I put a meter on the battery and get 12+ volts before turning key. When I turn key it drops to 8 or 9 volts most
likely due to the headlamp/marker lights coming on but all I get is the buzz. As soon as I shut the key off the battery goes right back to the 12+V. I think
the battery is good due to this. I also attempted to fire the starter with a jumper cable direct from the positive battery post but got nothing. I am now
getting depressed and drinking beer.....any helpful advice appeciated!

Sounds like your battery is shot. The voltage should not drop that much with the lights on.

I left Esmond RI back in 1979 and I haven't been back since...... thanks for reminding me. Won't start? Tear out the stahtah. Being lazy I would look
for the easiest things first. Like checking all the connections. Starting with the grounding side first. Electricity flowing from negative to positive and all.
Next I would have a "load check" done on the battery. Then I would wrap a rope around the rear tire, put the trans in 3rd gear, turn on the key and
pull the rope to spin the rear wheel to see if it starts. Hi, neighbah........ have a 'Gansett. Jump staht with a battry that is known to be good..... like
from your cah with the engine off. Red to red, black to black. I take no responsibility for anything that happens if you try any of my suggestions.

Also, when attempting to start and just getting the clicking/buzz I would catch a smell of rotten egg "sulfur' from the battery.

Does the battry have any watah? Dry batteries have an unpleasant tendency to EXPLODE. Never try to jump a dry battery.

Battery has watah. I read where the rotten egg smell means the battery is overcharging and expelling gas and this is the senario for an exploding battery. I
think this battery was a lame duck since I bought it. All last summer I had to juice it up every once in a while because it would run low and barely start.
Because the battery was 'new' I thought that the starter was going. I am picking up a new battery tonight. Bummah!

Could also be a sign that the voltage regulator is bad and allowing the battery to be overcharged. Cooking in its own juices. Overcharging quickly leads to
sulphation which shorts out the cells and the battery loses its ability to hold a deep charge, so you had to keep renewing its "surface charge". I
would look deeper into the charging system after it's running. Get an old set of separate voltage and amperage gauges in one of those plastic dash mounts,
connect the wires, duct tape it to your leg and go riding. I'm just a low-tech kinda guy. I wonder if "Tuffy's Family Restaurant" is still at
the Oakland-Mapleville bridge. Or "Eddie's Antiques" is still on Rt7 at Whipple Hill Road. Naaaah.

New battery started the bike. While running my neighbor put a volt meter on the battery and it was reading 12.6v....he said it should be reading 13+ volts and
he said this indicated that the battery wasn't charging. I will check out the voltage regulator now.

If the msmt was taken with the engine at idle speed (about 1krpm), 12.6V isn't bad. Most motorcycles don't have robust charging systems like cars and
trucks do. Your neighbor may not be cognizant of that. If the msmt was taken with the engine above 3krpm, then it does seem a bit weak.
