Improved Gas Milage |
Lead | ||
|
For the spring maintenance, I replace the spark plugs with the extended high speed plugs and I synched the carbs. This made quite a difference in the gas
milage. I went from an average of 40mpg to 38-41 city, and 45-47rural !!!

That is awesome!! Did you change some of your driving habbits also? With gas prices the way they are I have definitely changed mine. Do you have V&H pipes
on your bike?

I have been knee deep in playing mr fix it (home repairs, car repairs, and now bike repairs). Now comes time to try to enjoy myself by hopping on two wheels! I
soo love summer! Getting 45-47mpg is pretty good. Hopefully after getting all my minor bike repairs done I will be getting close to 40mpg.
Phaedrus's picture with the mountains in the background is beautiful. I soo want to visit South Dakota again!! |

Eethumper, Good to make your acquaintance. I have not seen posts by you before. I am still relatively new to the site, so I guess that would not be unusual.
Where are you located? Actually my picture is from Colorado, but I thank you for you compliment just the same.
I may have spoken too soon. I went out again last weekend and got 36-42mpg. This was more sustained 65-70 mph, and with considerable wind in the mountains. Last year I notice that my mileage suffered terribly on a windy day in the mountains. I had to push it to a gas station that day! (running out of gas caught me off guard - I should have had a lot more left by my calculations) I'll keep you posted for riding on a more normal day. I have V&H pipes on the bike as well as a K&N filter. I am a big buy (6'3" and 300lb) so I have a little wind resistance sticking above that stock shield as well as a sizable load.

I have been a member since 2003 or 2004 but I didn't know enough to post anything smart.
I am also tall 6'2" and weigh approx 230. I have enough wind resistance sticking over the windshield also. Sometimes my halflid acts as a parachute, even worse when the wind is in my face. Supprised my head hasn't popped off. It is about time to take the windshield off so I can get my summer protein. David, do you have the baffles in your V&H's? I pulled my out the other day and my ears are still ringing. I had to put them back in. If I need to be excessively loud for anything I know what to do. I think I need to rejet my carbs one jet higher. I get a slight popping sound with the baffles in and my screws turned 3.5 turns out. If I run without baffles then I need to increase the mixture slightly more so I might as well rejet one higher. |

eethumper,
No I have not taken the baffles out of the V&H. They are loud enough for me. Maybe we both should invest in the taller windshield. I did get a couple of splats, on my face shield during my last ride.

Dave.....What are the extended high speed plugs you refer to. I synched my carbs, but they weren't very far apart so didn't see any difference there.

Bob this information is straight from the shop manual, but I think it is in the manual too.
"For extended high speed riding" use: DPR8EA-9 by NGK or X24EPRR-U9 by DENSO. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Phaedrus, I'll try those plugs. I've looked at them before but have not tried them yet. I ride 600 mi round trip about twice a
month from GA, to NC. I just put on a set of V&H and had the carbs jetted. At 80 MPH steady I'm running 39-40 MPG. I have A Dayna 3000 Ignition Module
on the way, I want to see what affect these settings can do for MPG.

I have a 2000 with the K&N, V&H pipes, Jet kit, and I average 32 to 34 mpg, so how in the world are you guys getting 40?
I commute 80miles round trip to work every day, 1/4 rural highway (55-65 mph), 1/2 freeway (80+ mph), 1/4 city (35 mph). Recently my T started popping really bad so I had my mechanic take a look, he said it was running lean at low and mid throttle, so he moved the clips on the needles to give it more fuel at low to mid throttle, and it dropped to 32-34 from 35-37. HELP! 108 miles to reserve is ridiculous! |

Sandburner,
With the stock exhaust I get 34 mpg at 80+ mph, but usually can get 37 - 40 mph at 55 to 65 mph.

98 T, totally stock, two up, both city and highway, 36-39 mpg. One up and riding more aggressively I get about the same. I use Exxon mid-grade with an
occasional tank of Chevron mid-grade to keep the valves clean. I get lower mileage with both 87 octane and premium. There are soooo many variables affecting
mileage that unless I was getting figures waaay lower or higher than everyone else I'm not sure I could figure out what to change to affect my mileage.

Is the T a high compression motor?

EE,
The T has a low compression engine, 8:1.

99T, Cold plugs DPR8EA-9 NGK, K&N filter, stock jetting, 3.5" hole saw through end of stock exhaust,(sounds perfect!) 93 octane gas, 10w 40 honda
synthetic oil, factory windshield removed, and getting 44-46 mpg at 65-70 mpr. Jay.

I get between 40 and 45 mpg going around in the 60 mph range . I don't drive aggressively but I don't poke around either.
I'm of course speaking in relative terms. When I'm riding with my BMW riding friends I am riding much more aggressively keeping up, especially in the twisties. They have a very high skill level Stock bike |

aceman, what speeds are you averaging on the highway / freeway?
I think what i'm finding out is that the windshield causes a LOT of drag at high speeds (75+) which absolutely kills the fuel economy. |

Hey sandburner, I ride 65-75 mpr. mostly 70mpr. I also noticed a lot less buffeting and viberations in the handle bars with out the windshield. At 55mpr, I
notice a big difference when I roll the throttle in top gear!! It picks up speed much faster. I still get alot of complements on the bike! Jay.
