HSATF Member Posts: 6 07/08/08 3:16 PM	Tags : None Hey guys, Just got a pair of ISO grips like I had on my last Shadow, but I'm having a hard time getting the throttle cable ferrules off of the original grip. I don't want to yank them too hard with a pair of needle nose or anything. The instructions that come with the grips are lackluster, not surprisingly...I'm hoping someone out there has a trick for this. Anyone? Anything? Thanks guys! Evan

HSATF 1st Officer Posts: 733 07/08/08 4:18 PM	If I'm thinking of the right thing, they're threaded on. Are you talking about what holds the throttle cable assemblies onto the switch housing? or what holds the cable internal part (the wire) to the throttle barrel itself? duke loud horns save lives

HSATF Member Posts: 6 07/08/08 5:08 PM	Sorry...should've been clearer. I'm not talking about the throttle cable assemblies themselves, just the little ball on the end of the cable itself. I wasn't seeing an "easy" way for the cable to be loose enough for it to easily come off from around the end of the grip. Instructions say you can get a little more slack by loosening the adjuster down by the carbs...but if you guys didn't have to do that I don't reckon I should have to/want to. Thanks again, Evan

HSATF 1st Officer Posts: 733 07/08/08 5:25 PM	I think in the past I did not have to mess with the adjusters to get the cables off. I think one of the cable assemblies has a barrel adjuster up by the switch housing. Maybe that alone will give enough slack. duke loud horns save lives

HSATF Tail Gunner Posts: 90 07/08/08 8:06 PM	Hi Evan, Kuryakyn has a grip install video, I think they use a vtx 1800, but our install is the same.Use google search you'll find it quick.If you bought the grips with the throttle sleave inside you've got the wrong ones. Jack

HSATF 1st Officer Posts: 3889 07/08/08 9:47 PM	On the left side of the engine just under the edge of the tank is a bracket that holds the 2 cables together ahead of the carbs. Wiggle the throttle and you can see it rock back and forth. There are 2 screws that you can take out of the bracket (be careful not to loose them). Once the bracket is loose, then you can unhook the cables from the cam on the side of the carbs, and then push them back into the housings. This will allow you enough slack to pull them off the throttle end. This way you don't have to worry about getting the adjustments out of whack. Once I had the bracket off and the cable unhooked from the carb it was easy to get everything on the handlebar end buttoned up. The only other hitch I had was once it was all back together, the twist grip didn't snap back to the idle position. The cable was too tight it seemed. Messed around with it long enough and realized the round part of the cam on the twist grip is actually a bigger diameter than the OE grip. So I had to end up adjusting the end of the cable down by the carb after all. Anyway, it now twists freely and I'm rolling once again. Thanks for the ideas everybody. I never expected that I'd have to take the bracket off and unhook the cables from the carb to get those grips installed, but my hubby watched every move I made, and I got 'er done! The good thing is that I learned how that whole throttle cable assembly works, even though it was a bit of a struggle to get it put back together; always a plus for me to learn how something is assembled.
