Posts: 1908 07/23/08 9:07 PM	Tags : None Haven't been to the club since the end of May. Many things have changed in my life. The new job is a bit more of a hastle that I thought it would be, but I'm starting to get the hang of it. Originally there were two managers with 6-7 programmers each. A month after I started they released the other manager and put all 14 staff under me. Lost or released five with bad attitudes and starting to rebuild. Should have a full house by the end of August and a fairly good team by the end of the year. Sold off the Magna. Just was not getting any riding time as we always were taking the Miata out. Maybe in a year or two I'll see a dark red T for sale. Other news... my daughter (only one) got married July 19th. Man, time flew... first thing I remember was the rehersal dinner on Thursday night; then the wedding Saturday afternoon, what seemed like a quick party and then watching them tear down the tables Saturday night. Hope to break free of the chains for the T & Miata rally in Sept. Andy

My son is getting married in two weeks and its going to be a really big wedding. The kids are doing all the planning, so unlike my daughters wedding I'm just a passive listener. I'm really looking forward to all of it, except for the ex-wife showing up. There sure does seem to be a lot of Tourers for sale. Will the company be hiring another manager, or will you be getting paid double to do both jobs? If things go as scheduled I will be leaving from Clarksburg and heading straight to Materials Park for a 3 day course. It's a brand-new ASM course so I am hoping they do not have to cancel due to low attendance. If they do cancel it, then I am scheduled to spend a week on Landerhaven Drive in early November. One way or the other, I will be up your way, but I am hoping it is in September so I can ride my T. Fred

Posts: 1908 08/15/08 9:18 PM	Al, Had to deal with the "ex" topic as my daughters wedding. Was not too bad, after all, it's been about 20 years since the divorce... how could they still be pissed as me???? On the job front. Things went from bad to worse over the past couple of weeks. Got to a point where I was having chest pains, so I gave my two weeks notice and I'm out of there. My old employer has offered some contract programming work to carry me for six months (and may extend beyond). Still watching the Clarksburg trip thread... it does not look to hopeful but I may be able to break free Friday, Miata to the hotel, grab diner with the gang then head back home Saturday. Andy

HSATF 1st Officer Posts: 3889 08/15/08 11:08 PM	Andy, my son has been considering a Magna. On another site it was commented that the Magna gets terrible gas mileage. Have you ever checked that out on yours? Also, I know what you mean about being fed-up with your employer. I've been that way for several weeks now. One lousy decision after another that has had nothing but negative results towards my personal life. I'm just about to the point of pulling the plug, myself. I would most definitely take a huge cut in pay to start over with a new company, but money is not worth my sanity. Posts: 772 08/17/08 11:39 AM	Good to hear from you again Andy. I hope everything will work out for you. It appears many of us on this forum can relate to the job issues you have had and are having. I was hired by my current employer to manage one program with 10 staff and 2 clients. Over the years, thanks to management downsizing (while agreeing they did get rid of some dead wood), I now am responsible for three programs, 30+ full and P/T staff and 6 clients. Has my salary tripled with the threefold increase in work and responsibilty? Not by a long shot. I will be 62 this October and I think of retirement often. Posts: 1908 08/17/08 7:16 PM	Stan, As I recall, the mileage was not too bad. In the high 30's & low 40's. It's a different kind of bike. I've found with the v-twins, the sweet spot is between 1800-4000 rpms. The Magna is just getting warmed up by 4k and smokes in the 7-8k range. I think the bike redlines at 9600. After riding a GL1800, most bikes felt underpowered. For some reason, the Manga never felt that way. The only downfall... it's a 450 lb bike and rides like one. For LD touring I would prefer something in the 600-700 lb range. Fred, Looks like I'll get one week of vacation and three sick days for the rest of this year. May see if I can use one Friday 9/12; ride down to catch dinner with the gang (miata ride), then either head back home later that evening or the next morning. Andy

HSATF 1st Officer Posts: 607 08/18/08 9:17 AM	Stan, I had a '94 Magna before the Tourer and my good riding buddy still has one. I regularly got 50 miles to the gallon, he still does with his. This year when we rode down the BRP to the Honda hoot he was getting 55 to my tourer's 45. Naturally it is all about the wrist. There is loads of power above 6K or so and if you spend all your time there it probably got poor gas mileage. I had plenty of occasional fun but the 750cc engine can beat out the tourer in both MPG and power. As Andy said it is a very different bike, I wish I could have the Magnas power and light handling back, with the tourer's otherwise all-around goodness. Andy, Here's hoping you can make it down to the rally for a least a bit. Really you could do it all in one day (if you had to). It is less than 4 hours from my side of town.
