I usually do a beach trip in early Sept every year, but wife is deciding on spending time on the bike (which I'm happy about). I missed last year, but may
get to make this one! Hoping it works out.... this time!
NYMark, welcome to NC! Mark

This got complicated | #186 | ||

I've been busy and not thinking much about this Hilton Garden Inn Clarksburg deal; back at it, the hotel sent over a contract in order to get the
aforementioned group rate. Well it contains some pretty serious penalties (hundreds of dollars) for us canceling the event, or not meeting the minimum number
of rooms (which she wrote up as a higher number than I requested, such that my guess of 7 rooms would already be into penalties). Seeing how HSATF is not a
legal entity to enter into this contract, one of us would and I would not expect any of us to undertake this kind of exposure. So sorry guys looks like this
"deal" is a dead end.
Maybe I was naive to think that this
could be worked out. I think Andy tried this group rate thing one other year and he came to the same end I have.
I also reviewed the listed rates on the web page and noticed the rates I posted earlier where only for the first night. Friday and Saturday would be $8-10 more each night. so the cheapest rate on the web would be $76 Thursday and $84 Friday and Saturday. Average of $81.33. This is prepay and non refundable. Refundable was an average of $95.67; getting pricey and may limit the number of people that could attend. Looks like we may want to revisit the list. Actually I just reviewed and for me considering the accommodations I would still like to stay at the Garden Inn. It is just a touch more than the number two option (reluctantly; in my mind) of the Day's Inn @$79/night, but looks way nicer. If we can skip the pool the Bridgeport Microtel Inn & Suites @ $69 looks brand new and would be my vote. In the end I'll stay wherever because I'm really looking forward to going. What do you guys think we should do?? Tony

Tony.....you're doing a good job bird-dogging this hotel thing. Admittedly the Garden Inn is beginning to get a littel pricey. I would be staying two
nights on the road to make the trip so all total I'm looking at 5 nights lodging. So the costs are beginning to add up.
Your recommendation of the Bridgeport Microtel Inn & Suites is a good one. It is brand spanking new and clean (?). I even noticed that for some of us AARP members the rate is $64 a night. That's pretty decent. So it gets my vote.

Woot! John and I will be making our reservations with Microtel tonight. He's made up his mind that the shop will just have to do without his presence on
Thurs and Fri...so we'll arrive Thurs and leave for home on Sunday. I'm sooo excited that I'll get to meet you all!
(My CARA butt is already tired just thinking about that ride, as I've never ridden that far in one day.) Live It, Love It, Paint It, Ride It!

Sounds like this is going to be another one for the books! I wish I wasn't so new at my job and could weasel a few vacation days. Actually.... my throat is
feeling kinda scratchy, yeah, I think I'm gonna be really sick right around September 11. Do you think my boss will buy that?

Made my reservation today. Looking forward to meeting and riding with everyone.
Another fellow that I work with may ride his Shadow Spirit along with me. He doesn't have internet service and is unable to join the HSATF. We may leave a day or two earlier and check out south eastern Ohio prior to arriving in West Virginia. Any suggestions? I've heard that there are roads in S E Ohio that rival the Dragon. Any recommendations for a fun town to overnight in? Also, if anyone is interested in meeting up a day or two earlier in S E Ohio, let me know. |

Trip,
Glad to hear you are joining us. The Triple Nickel Highway (OH 555) is famous nationwide, It runs from Zanesville to the Ohio River at Little Hocking. However, I have ridden from central Indiana to WV several times and what I would recommend is staying on I-70 through Columbus, OH. There is not much in the way of interesting roads in western Ohio with the exception of the roads around Cincinnati which is too far south for your intended direction. Get off of I-70 at Exit 118. Head towards Summit on OH 158 & 256. Take OH 13 out of Summit and either stay on it or take OH 669. Either way, wind your way to OH 37 and go to McConnelsville where you want to get on roller coaster fun road, OH78. We did that road on our Fourth Annual T Rally. Continue on OH 78 all the way to the Ohio River, then drop down OH 7 and cross the River at Hannibal, OH & New Martinsville, WV. Go south on WV 2 and take another great fun road WV 20 to Clarksburg. My cousin lives on WV 20. You will like it. You can make that trip in one day if you want. Its about 400 miles from your house. I always did it in one day when I visited my cousin and was leaving from Cicero, IN (20 miles north of Indy). Too bad OH 536 is not in good shape. I used to take that to chop off some of the distance from OH 78 and OH 7 and because that road does rival the Dragon for intensity and number of curves. Unfortunately nobody has taken care of that road and it is literally falling apart in chunks. Kind of takes the fun out of riding it when your tires on sliding on bits of loose pavement. If you want to do it in more than 1 day, Zanesville and Cambridge have a passel of hotels each. Ask if you have questions.
