HSATF Member Posts: 27 06/27/08 3:49 PM	Tags : None This one is significantly more ambitious than my weekend ride to Virginia Beach (~450 miles rt). Caving friends are having a 4th of July party near Bonnieville, KY. It's about 620 miles each way. I intend to ride down on Thursday and back on Sunday. Friends are bringing most of the equipment I need at the campout, particularly food and cooking equipment. That should leave things managable for packing the T. Pictures: I now have a camera mount on my handlebars so no excuses. Fresh lube in the bike. Engine and drive shaft. Airhawk cushion specifically recommended for old fat guys Fog Togs for the unavoidable... The route is a wild card. The superslab once I get away from DC and I-81 is good. Rt 29 goes south a lot of the way. Alternatively, I could take 50 East all the way to OH. 200 miles of twisties accross the Appalachians... All thoughts and advise appreciated. Cheers, Nick

Posts: 6136 06/27/08 8:28 PM	Nick, Sounds like you are well prepared for your upcoming MC trip. US 50 across West Virginia is awefully fun and beautiful. We had our 2nd Annual T Rally there sponsored by Forum Moderators Skip & Lori. Looks like you have a good out too if you want to superslab it considering I-64 heads almost directly where you are going. I had ridden the backroads of Kentucky quite a bit and they are sweet; lots of curves, lots of views and mostly not heavily travelled. Have fun and bring on the pictures! Fred

HSATF Member Posts: 27 06/29/08 8:49 AM	Yep Looking forward to RT 50. Only problem is time. I'll need to leave pre-dawn so that I am headed West of Winchester about dawn. That will maximize the daylight available for the trip as I still want to arrive in central KY before dark. I am guessing I will come home on I64 as it's about an hour less time. I sure am likin' this.

Looking at Rt 50 West from Winchester, va all the way accross WV to Parkersburg, WV From there follow the Ohio River South on Rt 7 to Huntington, WV Then it the slab, I-64, to Lexington, KY From Lexington I'm going to take the Blue Grass PKWY South to Bardstown. Then 31E > 84 to Nolin, KY. Destination is a few miles South of Nolin 600 miles Weather looks fine going out on the 3rd. Comming back on the 6th looks like scattered storms just to make it interesting LOL Comments and suggestions always appreciated.

HSATF Member Posts: 27 08/06/08 8:27 PM	Sorry for the delay in responding. Trip was great. Wine, women and song in a spectuacular are to camp. Trip out: Took rt 50 from Winchester to I79. 79 to 64. 64 to the Blue Grass Pkwy 600 miles give or take. Started out just before dawn and arrived about 13 hours later. Rt 50 is twisty. As in 200 miles of twisty. I actually got tired and bailed when I hit 79. It was a relief LOL You can keep your 'dragon', Rt 50 is twisty all the way from Winchester, VA to Ohio... The slabs were not so bad. Made good time. Was motivated Comming home I took the same rt accept I stayed on 64 to Charlottsville and then took US 29 home. About the same distance. While in KY I took wenchy for a 100 mile ride around the area. We visited Lincoln's birth place. The cabin has a large granite building around it. Didn't expect that. Observations: MPG is 40 with the exception of riding 80 mph into a head wind. Then it's in the high 30s (needless to say it conked out at a light earlier than expected and I did not get the reserve lever thrown fast enough. But it did restart after a bit of fussing). The speedo reads high. When it said 75 I was actually going more like 70. This was confirmed by several of those warning sign radar set-ups, and also by traffic. This meaans that I am actually going fewer miles per gallon than thought by something between 5 and 10%. SO MPG is not really as good as indicated. She will cruise all day at an indicated 85 mph without complaint. Handlebar mounted cameras result in blurry pictures. A 24 ounce bottle of soda fits just fine up against the windscreen. It is possible to run over your own foot and not drop the bike (I refuse to elaborate on this). Backrest and highway pegs are wonderful things. 600 miles is too long for one day. Frog Toggs work just fine. The act of stopping and putting them on causes the sky to clear. The act of stopping and taking them off does the opposite. Cheers, Nick

Posts: 6136 08/07/08 11:26 AM	Nick, Congrats on your second trip. The reason we had our 2nd Annual T Rally and now also our 6th T Rally in WV is mostly because of US 50. What a great, fun road to ride. One thing you should know is that the speedometer and odometer are off by different amounts. Your speedometer and my T's speedometer read the same at an indicated speed of 75 mph, i.e. 70 mph. However, according to my GPS my T's odometer is very close to the actual distance traveled. It is less than 1% off whereas my speedometer is 7% off at cruising speed. I would say your calculated gas mileage is pretty close to correct. Too bad your camera took blurry pictures while moving. Posts: 6136 08/10/08 7:58 PM	Nick, Even though a bunch of the pictures were blurry, it was still easy to get the idea that you were riding through scenic countryside on exhilarating roads. I recognized a bunch of those places including the country store below. I think many of the Members that attended our Second Annual T Rally would recognize this place. I remember it well. We stopped there for gas and goodies. Just a mile up the road is where my Avatar picture was taken by Jimmy. Fred
