CB for my T? |
Lead | ||
|
Any advice on a CB for my T? Also, I have a J&M headset that I used as a passenger on a Wing but I'm not impressed with the sound quality. My main
priority is hearing other bikes (not a passenger) and since it's a group of 18 we get a little stretched out at times. I've read previous posts but I
know this technology changes pretty fast. I am not concerned with cutting edge (i.e. bluetooth) but would like the best sound quality and range that I can
get.

You have to get whatever the rest of your group is using. If it's a bunch of 'wingers, they are likely using CB but alternatives are FRS radios. Better
sound, but less range.
For a bike mounted CB unit the one to get is the J&M. CB technology hasn't really changed over the years.

The other option is a hand held cb unit. There are mounts for attaching a holder to the handlebars available, and some of these radios also work with headsets
and are hands free. Most can be had for a little over $100. The best sounding headsets from J&M is their Elite series at around $180 a set. Next is Edsets
for about the same price. But if you buy the radio, then I'd go with what the manufacturer recommends for that radio.

Sounds like a J&M CB and upgrade my headset is what I need to do. Will post any "leftovers" when the time comes. Laura

having come from a Goldwing also and still having the headsets, I would look at the handlebar mounted CB weatherradio combo with the push to talk button set up
as a trigger. It is operated without removing your hand from the grip. Sierra Electronics has them. It is made by J&M and your headset is compatible with
it. A bit pricey but nice. Otherwise just go with something small like a Uniden 510XL (regular CB) but add a good noise cancelling mike like a Turner Roadking.
You will have to "damn near brush your teeth with that mike" but it will sound as clear as most base stations. Also the larger the physical size of
the antenna usually the better the range. I ran a 4' self grounding fiberglass antenna on the wing and the range was about 3 to 5 miles. Way more than the
usual "Winger" got.That good range meant on group rides I could run in the back and still talk to the "leader". I would check out EBay for
a regular radio if you don't opt for the J&M.

We installed the J&M CB on the T and love it. Easy to use and easy to see while driving if you need to change channels or such.
We used our JM setups from the gold wing but had to get newer lower cords. ( 6 pin vs. 5 pin on the Goldwing ) |

I've ordered a J&M CB from Wingstuff (best deal I could find, had no shipping charges). I've also ordered the Elite headset but will try my 277(?)
Series first to check sound quality.

Great Laura,
It makes the ride even more fun when you can talk to others and even truck drivers on the interstates. Mark

PROBLEM. | #10 | ||

Once the CB is tightened down on the mounting bracket has anyone had a problem with it interfering with the choke - i.e. being too close to move the lever?

YES... It actually ended up being that there black bracket was 1/4" taller then there Chrome one we bought.
Did you get the chrome one or the Black one ?
I don't mind coming to work, but that eight hour wait to go home is a
bitch.

Chrome bracket. | #12 | ||

Jimbo...I have the chrome bracket. Even though I had misgivings about it initially, the person installing my radio had already started to file the choke lever
down. I used a rotary tool and took it down a little more and smoothed it out and it seems to be just fine. I have enough clearance and the push to talk
lever is in a good position so everything works for me. Thanks for asking.

It may be a little late to get in on the conversation, but I have two of the J & M radios and love them. The choke lever on mine just barely clears the
bottom of the radio using the black mount.
