I use these: http://www.etymotic.com/hp/er20.html
The foam plugs will kill high and low frequencies, so if you like to listen to music or CB, the ones in the link will let you hear the music and CB MUCH better in any helmet. They let through the entire frequency range so you still hear the highs and lows, but they pretty much kill road and wind noise. If I haven't worn them in a while, it takes a few times before they won't hurt, but if you use them on several trips, eventually your ears get used to them and they won't hurt for an hour or two, and taking them out at a gas stop, lets you go till the next stop. Not expensive and reusable. Also easy to grab and take out.

As for itching, try putting some lotion on Q-tips. I do that a couple times a week and it keeps itching to a minimum.

I try to wear my earplugs every highway trip, even if only an hour or so. The noise levels even on a Wing, are high enough to damage hearing after even an hour. I find that I can ride longer with less stress and am less tired when I wear my earplugs. And I enjoy my music and can talk on the CB better.

One warning though, if you stop for gas/food and take out the earplugs. remember to put them back in before starting up the next leg of your trip or you will get a big surprise at the volume of music and CB when they come on!
